Re: AT&T customers who do not have an iphone. Phone recs..please
I have a Samsung Solstice and love, love, LOVE it!! I also couldn't go the iphone route, but this phone is so cute and kind of similar! It's a touchscreen phone, so you can text either with a qwerty or with a numberpad (or with a handwriting recognition software thing, but it's not so great). I don't go on the internet with it, but I imagine that it's easy because everything else with this phone is.
I think the phone costs $30 or $50 after rebate (with a two year contract, of course), but our dealer waived the difference, so it was free for us!
I don't know what you're looking for in a new phone, but I hope this helped.
Also, as a side note, are you sure it's your charger? If so, have you replaced your charger? If it's not the charger, you might be able to get a new phone battery and keep your old phone.
I, personally,:
a.) don't want to be tied to my phone
b.) don't want to pay over $100 a month for the internet on the go when I already pay plenty for internet on my laptop
c.) don't need the entertainment factor; I read books on my Nook (which fits in my small-ish purse) when I'm bored on my hour-long train commute
d.) have a pretty decent sense of direction, so I don't need a GPS with me at all times (plus, I have an actual GPS unit that is amazing, and Goog-411 goes a long way too).
Honestly, I feel that my phone is good for calls and texting, and even though it would be super amazing to have the internet in the same unit with me all the time, I don't think it's worth the hassle or money yet. If it were only a couple dollars more a month, and if I felt that I would get something more out of it than what is offered now, I might spring for the internet and an iphone. Right now, I am on the internet waaaaaay too much as it is!
I will admit that some of the apps look pretty cool. I don't think the iphone is terrible or anything; it's just not for me yet. I'm sure I'll have one or something comparable at one point in the future!
I have no idea where you get the $100 extra a month from! We have a family plan with two iphones on it, and it's about $120 total with the data package and unlimited texting. It's not much more than when we had two cheapass Samsung phones with Verizon.
How much was your nook? Since the iphone has the nook and kindle apps, you could have just bought the phone and got so much more.
I'm not tied to my phone at ALL, but it's the most convenient thing when I need to use it.
I'm sorry if my OP sounded a little snarky on the screen. I honestly didn't mean to attack iphones (or their users); I was just trying to answer your question clearly, and I can see how the pointed list could have seemed a little rude.
I did not say that an iphone would be $100 extra. I meant $100 a month total. I agree, a data plan for an extra $100 would be ludicrous! It sounds like you are getting a great deal on your iphones, but your plan still is more than what I pay for my family share plan (with 1400 minutes and 200 texts for two people, which we never go over), and I don't see a need for the extras offered in the iphone in my life as it currently is. When it comes down to it, that is really why I don't have or want an iphone, which is what you asked. If people want data plans and iphones and can afford them, that's completely fine with me! I just don't have a place for an iphone right now.
My posts may make me sound like a technophobe with my limited plans (which I'm not), but I've assessed my phone usage, and I have found that I really don't talk or text nearly enough to warrent the unlimited plans, which is what is required with the iphone. It's really just my personal lifestyle (which doesn't include a conscious shunning of technology or something weird like that). I see the good parts of the iphone -- the commercial where the mom turns off her home lights while on the plan makes me drool with happiness -- but it still not a good fit for me yet. I love my really awesome Samsung and the features I use with them!
My Nook was a gift, but I know it was over $200. That's a one-time expense, and I really like how it's the size of an actual book, not the size of my palm. I'm a big reader, so this was a gift that made sense for me.
Again, I'm not trying to bash you or other iphone users, and I'm not implying that I'm better/smarter/holier than you for not having an iphone. I'm just explaining why I don't have or want an iphone. I am glad that you replied with your own experiences. And, if you want me to lend you Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, just let me know!
Hehehe no I didn't think you were coming across snarky or anything. I just hear so many people (online and IRL... just in general) talking about how they "just don't want an iphone" or saying that they "don't like them."
I didn't get it... What's not to like, especially for people who buy ipod touches, kindles etc (why not just get the phone, rather than carry around two+ seperate things?)... it's the ultimate all in one tool.
We have put our phones to good use- GPS when we travel (it saved us in Puerto Rico when we had a crappy map that didn't match our other crappy map), games, books and internet while we're stranded at airports or while we're flying, all of our music which comes in handy in a lot of different situations. I read about a novel a week, so it's nice that I can take our my phone and read everytime I have a moment.
We don't have to have the unlimited plans (at least not last time I checked), we decided it's just worth it to have them, rather than go over. The only downside I see to the iphone is that everyone on the planet has one. I keep meaning to get a unique case for mine so that it looks different, but I can't find a nice one.
