can anyone tell me about agapanthus bulbs?

I have 2 blue agapanthus plants that I bought last year- one that I planted in the ground, and one that I kept in the pot it came in. I did not dig the ones out of the ground over the winter (just covered them with mulch), but I did take the pot of bulbs inside for the winter.

Anyway, I want to move the ones I planted to a different location- but as I dig them up, I notice that the root system is MASSIVE, and I don't know how to dig them up. Do I just cut into the roots? How do I go about doing this, and how do I divide the bulbs? It doesn't seem as clear cut (compared to tulips!) as to where I am supposed to divide the bulbs! I'm clueless. Any input would be appreciated!
