Just watched Food, Inc. over the weekend.
And we have decieded to ONLY eat local grass fed, free range meats! Will work on buying and storing the Vegetables over the Spring, Summer and Fall months. I guess we never realized how bad it was. I knew it wasn't the best but the movie really opened my eyes to the conditions and treatment of both animals AND people (the workers). The tip of the iceberg though was Clarence Thomas and all of the other politicians in bed with these horrible companies. Feel like the government REALLY doesn't care about its citizens and our health!
Have you seen the movie yet? What did you think? How did it make you feel?
Re: Just watched Food, Inc. over the weekend.
It made me mad at Monsanto. I already knew about the state of our food system, but it opened my eyes to how farmers and workers are treated.
We eat *mostly* organic grassfed meat from local farms, but I'm still trying to figure out what to do when I'm traveling.
This! I've radically changed our diet in the last 6-8 months since I began educating myself on our food system, growing/GMO habits and worker treatment.
We now eat mostly ogranic meats and veggies. So far I've been able to locally source humanely and naturally raised pork (bought 1/3 pig), eggs, I've got chickens coming in a few weeks when they're ready and grassfed ground beef. I also supplement with grassfed, local steaks from Whole Foods because I can't get those from my ground beef farmer. I can't wait until the farmers markets open this summer. I've NEVER been and I'm beside myself excited. We're also growing a garden this year (our first ever) and I've already started many of my seeds and should be able to start putting stuff in the ground in about two more weeks.
Try the vegetarian options. They're surprisingly good.
If I can find tasty veg options while traveling to Air Force Bases for work, anyone can. Voila, no mistreatment of animals.
It made me mad at Monsanto too, hence my siggy. I already knew about our food system, the waste and the confinement; treating workers like, well, animals; and agriculture bobbing on a sea of petroleum. If you liked Food Inc. try Michael Pollan's books like The Omnivore's Dilemma.
Food Inc. pushed us even farther into our local, organic food scene. We bought a chest freezer, so we'll eat our backyard garden all summer and freeze and can the produce from the farmer's market. Woo hoo for organic, local tomatoes in February!
ETA: On the subject of GMOs, an article someone posted yesterday said 97 percent of soybeans and 80% of corn are GMO
all courtesy of fvcking Monsanto. All the food additives and preservatives, like citric acid (which sounds like it would be made from citrus) are made from corn too.
This has made us go completely organic on all corn and soy products we buy. It is so much easier than wondering if they are GMO.
