Relocating to Indiana

Hi Ladies,

We're thinking about making the move to Indiana from California (LA area to be exact) but i have no idea where to start looking for good areas to live and what not.  We're looking around the Indianapolis area but more in the country for houses with a few acres of land. Please recommend some areas to start looking. Also that have good schools because we have 2 children. Or if you know any websites that can make me become familiar with the area. Any help is appreciated. : )

Re: Relocating to Indiana

  • One of the first places that comes to mind is Center Grove, IN.  It's about a 35 minute drive to downtown, has excellent schools, and great houses with acreage.  It's located in Johnson County, which is south of Marion County (where Indy is located)  There are lots of towns surrounding Indianapolis that you can find that though.  Depends on how far out you want to be from downtown Indy, I guess.

A lot of people are fans of the Carmel/Westfield area- it's north of Indy.  Others are fans of the Plainfield/Avon area- again, another area with land and great schools.

Good luck in your search and let us know what you decide!

  • we live near greenwood (just south of downtown about 15 minutes) and there are houses here within your specifications. It really depends on where you/DH will be working, and what "feeling" you want.. Are you going to be able to come visit prior to the move?
  • Thanks for your help. We will be working from home, that's why we need a big space. We're planning on coming one weekend to do nothing but house hunt. But I kinda wanted to do my own research first so i have a basic idea of what we want / don't want.We want to get away from the hustle and bustle but not too far out in the middle of nowhere.

How big are these towns you've mentioned?

  • Dh and I live on the north side in Hamilton County.  Its a really nice county.  Actually it was voted the best county in america 2008 according to Forbes Stick out tongue

But yeah good schools, really nice people, and a lot around here to do.  We  live in a Neighborhood but there are plenty of farm land nearby.  Also a lot of empty acres too if you'd be interested in having a house built.

  • When you house hunt, make sure to find out about internet service.  We are more rural than the places listed, but it took 14 weeks to get DSL in our house because they didn't have lines installed.  Our realtor told us they we here and it was no problem.  We tried broadband modems, but they were super slow (think dial up) and expensive.  We are even right outside of the town.

Also, look into Farm Credit for financing if you end up in the country.  We used them for our house.  You buy $1k in stock and become part owner.  This translates to they can never sell your mortgage.  They have a 1 acre minimum on lots and it can not be located in the city.  You can also buy existing as long as it fits in the guidelines.  We have had no issues in anything we did with them from the application until now.  I also know several people who are very happy with them.  You do not have to be a farmer or farm land to use them.

  • If you are looking for lots of land...on the north side of indy I would check out Noblesville, Westfield, or Zionsville.  Don't look anywhere inside of Interstate 465, you will not find a lot of land and the areas are not great.  Carmel has great schools, but it's all suburbs.  I live on the north side so that is what I like and that's what I am able to recommend.  Good luck and welcome to tornado alley :)

  • We moved from San Diego to the Indianapolis area this spring. We built a house in Brownsburg which has a country feeling to it, but is still close enough to the city. I would suggest getting in touch with a realtor who can send you a relocation package with info. about the different areas and schools.

  • There are a lot of homes like you describe in and around Greenfield, IN (Hancock County).  It's about 30 minutes east of downtown.  You could also try the Fortville or McCordsville areas.  They're on the eastern border between Hamilton and Hancock Counties.  Although from there I'm guessing it would be more like 45 minutes to downtown (due to lack of proximity to the highway).

    GL!
