confession

i am obsessed with our budget and finances. the other day, i used an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper and a pen, and wrote down everything coming in and going out for through SEPTEMBER. i compulsively search the internet for information on how to do our finances better, and it's pretty much all i think about. i'm not worried about making ends meet, because i figured out the next 6 months, but i can't get it out of my head... (i don't do it to the last penny though. that would be crazy.) haha

    OCD much? :)

My confession? I'm eating Peeps for breakfast...ahahhahaha gross.

  • But hey at least you're aren't just completely letting them go right?

I get paid weekly so I feel like I make nothing - which I know is untrue, but I'm so used to seeing paychecks that cover 1/2 the month that these weekly checks seem so very small. So I have every single week planned out for months. Not until September, but through May (and I did that back in January...I just haven't gone farther than May since we'll be moving around there that I don't want to plan and then have to change it lol). I also have a spreadsheet detailing what we bills we have to pay and how much and when, and also what we spend our money on. (although that part has been good to see where the heck all our money goes and where we can cut our spending when and if we have to) So yeah, you're not alone.

  • I do this too. I have it in my Outlook calender. For each paycheck for C and I both. What bills need to be paid from each check are, how much they total and how much is left after those bills are paid. For every single paycheck from now until September. If a bill changes, I change it on my calender. I also have a spread sheet that adds everything else. Try the link below.

  • ooohhhh me likey the excel spreadsheet!!! thanks jill!!! :):):) and it's nice to see i'm not alone in my mindset. you girls are awesome!

  • Its nice right??? I love that thing. It really makes you realize how much money is wasted in certian places and where you can really cut back. It made me more aware of what I was buying and what I didnt really need to buy. It has now made me more of a "needs" kind of buyer as opposed to being a "wants" kind of buyer.
  • I did this last year with an excel sheet and think I may need to start it up again.  It's really great to know where everything is going.  Sometimes I think there is x amount of dollars in the bank account and then I am surprised when I check and it's lower than expected.

If there's one thing it's okay to be OCD about, finances is it!

  • I won't even get into details, but I'll tell you that you're not alone Wink

And the crazy part is, I love it.  I consider more of a hobby than a chore.

It's a good obsession to have, IMO Party!!!

  • Thats not crazy. DH projects our money for a year (factoring in paychecks, every bill we pay, and projections of what he thinnks we will spend in a given week including birthday/wedding presents, etc.) and checks all of our accounts and updates his excell spreadsheet DAILY.

Definitely not alone. :)  I also consider it like a hobby.  I look at our budget spreadsheet multiple times a day.  We've kept one on excel since we got married and it's really been the best thing ever, haha.  For real.  I love it.

The only thing that kind of throws everything off for us is the paychecks I get from Kohls.  The hours are inconsistent and I get paid every week from that.  So it's not the same amount every single week, which drove me crazy at first since I couldn't really find a good way to add that to our budget.  So then I just figured that we should budget without that money and that money will just be extra each week to put into savings.  It's really a win-win because we put more into savings that way and it doesn't drive me crazy trying to change our budget all the time. I was waiting for you to weigh in on this confession Andrea. lol

I think there are a lot worse things in life you could be obsessed about....this is a good obsession as long as don't get sick over every penny spent.

  • i use mint.com and I am obsessed with it. I also check my checking account about 4 times a day
  • Paul is obsessed about it now. He used to have some skewed views on finances so it's such a great control for him to keep everything in order.
