Cheap 4th of July getaways?

DH and I are trying to plan a trip with another couple for the 4th of July and are having trouble finding a place to go where the flight wouldn't be ridiculously expensive because of the holiday. Vegas is out, the flights are already too pricey. We are considering New York or Boston. Does anyone have any ideas? We want to go somewhere we can eat, drink and be merry. We're not against driving.

Re: Cheap 4th of July getaways?

  • Eli, have you been to Chicago?  I loved loved that city!!!  Transportation is amazing, the food is superb, and it's just fun!!! I heard that in that time of the year it's amazing!
  • Eli - I am not sure what type of getaway you are looking for. But I am always a fan of beachy destinations. It's funny I never ever go to the beach in Miami but as soon as I plan a trip a beach has to somehow be involved. Anyhoo what do you think of perhaps going to St. Petersburg, FL. I have researched trips there before since I want to go and it seems like such a lovely and lively place. I do remember that the hotel rates where not too expensive. Plus you could drive up.

Chicago is also a good option. I went there last June and loved it. I have pictures on my FB if you want to see.

  • Hey Eli! Have you tried priceline.com? We have gotten such great hotel and flight deals to NY with the name your price deal. We stayed in the Doubletree Metropolitan in Manhattan for $100 a night. Considering its NY that was really inexpensive. We've also used it to stay in Orlando.

  • For 4th of July I would look into either Boston or Philadelphia because they have really great all-city celebrations for the holiday.
  • Thanks for all of the suggestions, ladies!

Gladys, I haven't been to Chicago but the friend who I am traveling with went last year. I don't think she wants to go again. :( I really want to go!

Sandy, we are considering beachy vacations like the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico. I think we all kind of want to get out of Florida.

Eli, I haven't tried priceline - I usually use expedia, but I'll definitely have to check it out!

Exhibitv, I hadn't even thought of Philadelphia. What is there to do there?

  • We just went to Philadelphia over New Year's and it was an awesome and cheap trip! Basically all of the historic sites (relating to the declaration of independence and constitution) are part of a national park and are all FREE.  They are all within walking distance, so we didn't spend any money on transportation.  On July 2nd they do a reading of the declaration in front of independence hall, where it was written, but the whole weekend they have events.  We are thinking of going, maybe next year, because we heard it was really cool.  It's a nice city (kind of like Boston), with lots of historic areas, nice restaurants and bars.

I was going to suggest Philadelphia. There is already talk of July 4th celebration. I am looking forward to being here during the celebrations! It would be a perfect place to drink and be merry!
