?s for the mommies

1. How long did your period-like cramps last before true labor started?

2. Did you have a written birth plan to give to your doctor and hospital?  If so, where did you create it from? Website or your brain?

3. All the signs that you were told would happen just before true labor, did they happen or no?

4. Did your water break prior to going to the hospital? I'm always wondering if mine did, but don't know what to expect!

I think that's all...any other additional helpful information is greatly appreciated!  Sorry if any of this is TOO personal!

Re: ?s for the mommies

  • 1. How long did your period-like cramps last before true labor started?  a couple of weeks... but you know I was being induced

    2. Did you have a written birth plan to give to your doctor and hospital?  If so, where did you create it from? Website or your brain? We checked the birth plan on thebump, and read it through. We didn't write anything down, we knew our doctor was on the same page, and we just told the nurse the  few things we really wanted: DH cutting the cord, breastfeeding, time with LO before the weighting, basically

    3. All the signs that you were told would happen just before true labor, did they happen or no? n/a

    4. Did your water break prior to going to the hospital? I'm always wondering if mine did, but don't know what to expect! You will know! It's a gush of warm water that you can't control or hold. Mine broke at the hospital

    Other information:

Pack a baby nail clipper! Sadie will have sharp nails and she'll scratch her face before you know it.

And don't stress too much, just remember to breathe and enjoy the ride. You'll know when you're having contractions and you'll know when they're strong enough to go to the hospital.

And in the meantime, sleep! You'll need your strength for labor and for those first few days.

Good luck, girl! Can't wait to meet Sadie!

  • 1. How long did your period-like cramps last before true labor started?  On a few occasions during the final month.  The timeable contraction cramping started two days before hard labor.  Everyone is so different.  Some people are like, labor signs --> BOOM.  Others are laboring forever.

    2. Did you have a written birth plan to give to your doctor and hospital?  If so, where did you create it from? Website or your brain? No.  I just told them yes, please, to epidural.  I had asked my doctor before about walking epidural...she said that I'd probably want more pain management than that if I wanted pain management at all.  I was in some SERIOUS pain for half a day before the epidural.  Some people can bear it, and I have a high tolerance for pain, so I think I had some extreme contracting.

    3. All the signs that you were told would happen just before true labor, did they happen or no?
    4. Did your water break prior to going to the hospital? I'm always wondering if mine did, but don't know what to expect!

My water broke first.  When my water broke (at the Wal Mart, yee haw), it was more of a drip.  I did see a a bit of a clear gush with floaty things (like peeling skin) and a mucus plug when I soaked in the tub.  Then the contractions became very regular 4 minutes apart.  Once we got to the hospital...they were like 20 minutes apart.  When I started the meds...they stopped, so I went on Pitocin.

  • 1. How long did your period-like cramps last before true labor started? I never experienced this.  I had ONE contraction on Monday before I had him.  Then woke up on Tuesday morning contracting the whole day.  I never had period like cramps at all.  I had pressure and pain for weeks before hand though. 2. Did you have a written birth plan to give to your doctor and hospital?  If so, where did you create it from? Website or your brain? No.  I really feel like there is not a real point to so-called birth plans.  My birth plan involved getting him out in a safe manner.  I labored at home for longer than I thought I would as I'm usually a big wuss.  Looking back I could have done without the epi since they turned it off after barely having it.  But like I said, my birth plan was basically to go with the flow.  That way there'd be no disappointment if it ended in a c/s or an induction.  THe main thing was having a safe delivery and a healthy kid at the end. 3. All the signs that you were told would happen just before true labor, did they happen or no?No.  The only thing I had was a bloody show that freaked me out because it was A LOT of blood.  Like the last day of a period type bleeding - light for a period but heavy for a pregnant chick.  I though a bloody show was like a one time thing, not an all day thing.  Then again, I had an "annoyed" cervix.  That and I nested like a mofo.   4. Did your water break prior to going to the hospital? I'm always wondering if mine did, but don't know what to expect!Mine broke while at the hospital on its own.  I thought I peed myself.

  • Thanks for the info girls...nothing definitive, but we shall see how it goes!

I just got finished cleaning BASICALLY the entire house....I dust mopped the floor, then orange glowed the wood floors, vacuumed the kitchen and bedrooms, and bathrooms, and then swiffered and cleaned the toilet, and then cleaned the stainless steel appliances...I am hoping/thinking that is my burst of energy!

UH THIS IS SOOOO nerve-racking!  I just want to meet Sadie!

Well you don't have long so you better get a move on woman!  Or Sadie does.
  • 1) I only experienced period like cramps while I was in labor.

    2) Ditto Rachel. I'm not a big fan of "birth plans". I would just communicate your wants/needs with your DH, doctor & nurses and make sure you're all on the same page. After that, just go with the flow.

    3) Back pain and diarrhea.

    4) N/A-Hospital induction

If you're too nervous to use fingernail clippers, you can just bite her fingernails. I know it sounds kinda gross but we have yet to use clippers on Lil. Our pedi actually suggested we do this to avoid accidentally cutting her fingertips. Though, if you have a newborn that sleeps a lot, you may be able to cut them when they're sleeping.

Good luck Mama, you're going to do great!

  • 1. How long did your period-like cramps last before true labor started?

I had contractions off and on for almost 3 weeks before giving birth, mostly at night.  They were nothing compared to actual labor though.

    2. Did you have a written birth plan to give to your doctor and hospital?  If so, where did you create it from? Website or your brain?

Our hospital sent us a package of stuff to fill out and send it with our registration forms, including a birth plan.  I filled it out, but all I said was that we were going to go with whatever happened . . . we weren't stuck on a "plan."

    3. All the signs that you were told would happen just before true labor, did they happen or no?

    I was induced, so no.

    4. Did your water break prior to going to the hospital? I'm always wondering if mine did, but don't know what to expect!

The OB broke my water in the hospital after an hour or so of minor contractions on Pitocin.  Once he did that, my pain went sky high.  (Sorry.)  I had an epidural in place within 20 minutes from the time they broke my water.  Had I known better, I would have asked for the epidural first.  But, had I not had the epidural (which slowed my labor down) I would have probably given birth within an hour.

I think that's all...any other additional helpful information is greatly appreciated!  Sorry if any of this is TOO personal!

Ditto on the nail clippers!  I clip Bebe's nails about every 2 to 3 days and have never cut her.  She is really good and generally holds still for me while I do this.  I didn't expect her to have a ton of hair either, and didn't bring a soft brush.  I used the comb in the hospital but I wish I had brought the brush because her scalp had two little scabs from where the fetal monitor leads were attached.

    Good luck!
