We are looking into getting a new car seat for Miss P as she is growing out of her snugride. I know there was a post earlier about seats.
For the mommies that have the bigger car seats which ones would you suggest. We have a Ford Escape and a Ford Fusion right now. We are looking to get 2 and don't know where to start. I heard great things about the Alpha Omegas, as well as the Britax, Radians and Complete Air. Any advice would be great.
TIA
Re: carseat question
B has also outgrown his (he was 19lbs at 6m so I would guess probably 21 now and the seat max is 22lbs).
We did a lot of research and read up on carseat.org to see what they thought of the seats we had narrowed it down to.
Britax - not worth the money. It is $299 and doesn't come with all the other "stuff" that other models in that price range come with
Radians - This was on our list but is huge so we didn't think we would be able to get it into our car rear facing (going to keep him rear facing for as long as possible) and have someone be able to sit in the passenger seat.
Complete Air - Also on our list but it only goes up to 50lbs where as the other seats go up to 65lbs. Which could mean having to get another seat when he hits 50lbs so we took it off our list.
We are going with the True Fit. The new models (there are 2) come up in April. The more expensive one has an upgraded rear crash protection. We plan to get one with the upgrade and one without.
There is a thread on carseat.org where you can search for the carseat you are looking at and the type of car you have. People have posted how it fits in their car.
Without extra rear crash protection
With extra protection
The Graco My Ride 65 gets great reviews for having a high weight for rear facing so you might want to check that one out too. We didn't add it to our list because it is shorter than other seats so if B ends up being tall he may out grow it fast. Also because it seems to have a steeper recline and I think that would drive him crazy.

That is the one we got for DD when we switched her to a convertable. She is a tall girl and it's pretty deep so she isn't cramped in the leg department while she is rear facing. It is quite large though so unless you have a big vehicle I wouldn't get it. What I do like about it is that it's easy to adjust depending on the layers of clothes your LO is wearing. It also automatically adjusts the height of the straps when you put your child in the seat so you don't have a fight on your hands when your child grows a few inches.
BTW sorry if what I wrote before sounded a touch b!tchy. I didn't intend it to be! It just took us forever to figure out what was going on with my brother's baby seat and it was a Graco. That is the only reason I suggested it.
Do you have Baby Bargains? I use it for EVERYTHING I buy. Although it doesn't have the complete air in it, it does have the rest. This is what it gives them in ratings:
1. Alpha Omegas- Rating D Bottom line: Too expensive and hard to use
2. Britax- Boulevard- Rating A- High marks for ease of use and reader feedback
Decathalon- Rating B+- you can use the tether to 65lbs unlike the Boulevard which has a 50lb limit. Decathalon is virtually the same as the Marathon.
3. Radian- Rating A- Only complaint is that the seat is quite heavy but gives Britax a run for its money.
Hope that helps a bit!
Thanks Janacash, I'm going to go to chapters today to see if they have the book. We are looking to buy some other things so I'll go check it out.
I have the First Years True Fit as well.
When rear facing, it can be a bit of a pain in the ass to adjust the strap length, as the adjustment "thing" gets wedged by the back of the seat when rear facing. But because it is a continuous strap system (There is only 1 strap, that ends up going over both shoulders) it is pretty rare to need to make adjustments. The nice thing about the true fit is that there is a headrest that comes off when rear facing, so you can put it rear facing in a smaller car until she becomes too tall or too heavy for it to be without the headrest. I have a 2000 Grand Am, DD is almost 19 months old and she is getting to the point where she is too big to be in it without the headrest.
I'm going to have to turn her around, because it won't fit in my car rear facing with the headrest, but 19 months is still pretty good, I think. I believe you have a small SUV, so you should have tons of room, even with the headrest rear facing. The nice part is, it normally retails for about $199, but if you watch for sales, I got one of mine for $169, and one for $149.
Oh they fixed that problem with the new models! So now it is easier to adjust the strap length.
I wonder how quickly they will go on sale if the new models are coming out in a few weeks? I searched last month for one of the old models but there are completely sold out everywhere.
They don't have any in right now. I don't know when they will be in stock because right now you can only order online for delivery in the beginning of April.
I have to go in to get some other stuff tomorrow I can ask them when they will have floor models in if you would like?
