Re: Big food recall with HVP!

  • I was wondering what HVP was....Hydrolized Vegetable Protein. Sounds gross! Yet another benefit of not eating processed foods, I don't have to worry about this!

  • Yup same here, we eat very little processed foods.  Thanks for the info though.

  • Oh. Trader Joe's organic ranch dressing is on the list. I think that gets mentioned in here from time to time, doesn't it?

  • organic =/= not processed, not at all! Trader Joe's is like processed food central. I'm pretty sure that SG also meant, like me, not eating a lot of 'made' foods, things in jars and packages. Mostly I buy dairy, and produce.

BTW I looked up HVP, and apparently its basically a way to get around MSG labeling.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrolyzed_protein

Hydrolyzed Protein is protein that has been hydrolyzed or broken down into its component amino acids. While there are many means of achieving this, two of the most common are prolonged boiling in a strong acid (acid-HVP) or strong base or using an enzyme such as the pancreatic protease enzyme to stimulate the naturally-occurring hydrolytic process.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, hydrolyzed protein is used to enhance flavor. The chemical breakdown of proteins may result in the formation of free glutamate that joins with free sodium to form monosodium glutamate (MSG). When added this way, American law does not require the labels to list MSG as an ingredient.[1] .

Yes that is what I meant.  We also mostly buy produce and dairy.  Beyond pantry staples that have to come in packages like pasta, we do buy a few packaged items like Thai Kitchen peanut sauce.  However I read their labels very carefully to avoid GMO and ingredients with hidden meaning like TVP.  We're slowing cutting as many prepared foods as possible. I was holding on to my last GMO product, Hidden Valley Ranch, for a long time but we found a quick Zesty Vinagrette recipe where we can use DH's homemade Red Wine Vinegar and it's the sh!t.
