How to keep deer from eating our tulip buds?

Last year we lost ALL of our tulips to a deer attack.  And we live one street off a busy intersection in the 'burbs!  Tonight we spotted deer on our street again.  Our tulips and daffodils are just getting started.  What can I do to keep the deer from eating them again?

Re: How to keep deer from eating our tulip buds?

  • My dad swears by shaved/grated bars of Irish Spring.  He grates/shaves a bunch at the beginning of the spring and sprinkles it around the plants he doesn't want eaten.  Unfortunately, you need to reapply after each rain.

I plan on trying this same trick myself this year since we now live in an area with a ton of deer.

I have also heard that if you spread dog hair or cut human hair around, that can work.  But again, it needs to be replaced regularly since the scent that keeps the deer away fades.

Though I look forward to hearing other peoples tricks to keep them away.

  • I'm pretty sure deer don't like daffodils.  At least, the ones I bought said they were "deer resistant"
  • I live within the city limits, but deer still keep eating my tulips too. I spoke with a local plant grower yesterday and she gave me these ideas:

Garlic water - either soak garlic cloves in water and sprinkle over flowerbeds

Human urine (have hubby pee over the bulbs) - yeah I know - gross!

Human hair - collect hair out of your brush and spread around flowerbeds

cayenne pepper - sprinkle around flowerbeds

I have not tried any of them yet, but I plan on trying the garlic water tonight.

  • human hair works for deer and rabbits... check with your beauty shop and ask if they can save the cuttings...

you will have to do most these weekly - biweekly as the scents will fade.

  • Lots of herbs deter deer.  I know rosemary is one.  You might try planting some around your garden.
  • We used to get blood meal from the Fish and Game.  Now we have some extensive electric fences.

Depending on your location/situation, Fish and Game might control the population in your area, or issure kill permits.
