Clicky Poll: Milk (NBR)

Cow's milk doesn't normally give me problems, but I think it's contributing to my pregnancy bloat/gas.  So, I picked up some almond milk today, which got me wondering...

Re: Clicky Poll: Milk (NBR)

  • I drink cow's milk, but only organic and full fat so it has been through no petroleum processes.  Um, yeah, I'm kind of a freal about my milk now that I've read about it.
  • Just a head's up, I've read that cow's milk can make heartburn worse, too - so if you start getting that, it's another reason to avoid the milk. (I can, however, wholeheartedly recommend Zantac - I think I'd have gone up in flames from heartburn without it Stick out tongue).

Thanks, Lisa!  The one thing I can consistently eat these days is cereal...hence my need for milk.

I actually like the taste of rice milk, but I don't like all the carbs.  And I've ready some scary things about soy milk.  I thought I'd give almond milk a try for now until I read something scary about that one, too.

  • I use soymilk but don't really drink it.  I'll put it on cereal, in tea, that kind of thing.

I've seen oat milk, potato milk and hemp milk but haven't tried them.

I can't stand the flavor of soy milk (I've tried to acquire the taste but just can't) - what's almond milk like?

  • i don't drink any of it and don't even get me started on my soapbox of why dairy is sooooo not good for you....i would avoid soy milk-very processed-almost all soy is gmo and makes your blood ph very acidic (not good) and it is also very estrogenic.  my husband likes some dairy so he toys around with rice milk, almond milk, and coconut milk.. just my 2 cents
  • Since I'm diary free (due to BF Ashton) I have not acquired any taste to drink any milk (almond, soy or rice). I do use rice or soy milk when cooking if needed. I try to avoid anything that has to do with cheese or milk thoughStick out tongue and load up on leafy greens and vitamins to get my calcium.

Wait, are women not supposed to have dairy when they're BFing?? I didn't know that!

And I never heard anything bad about soy milk in my life until I opened this post! I do occasionally drink soy milk but mainly because I like it with certain cereals and I like it in my smoothies. Normally, I'm all about cow milk. I like my yogurt and cheeses too.

As far as I know, you only have to limit or eliminate dairy if your baby shows signs of allergy or sensitivity to it - cow's milk is a common culprit, but most moms can eat anything they want (or so I understand).

  • We drink organic cow's milk, and we use chocolate Silk soy milk for smoothies.  I really like the Silk brand for soy milk.

But, geez... seems like everything's bad for you these days... Tongue Tied

This is how I feel!  I am often frustrated by what seems like should be healthy foods, somehow being turned into unhealthy ones due to someone's "study."   Moderation and balance is my motto!

Anyway, I usually drink cow's milk (well, not really drink, but use for cereal), but I do have almond milk once in a while for a treat....I love it!

Amen! I remember reading a study last year that said potato and bread cause cancer... that was the moment I threw my hands up in the air and said I'm out.

I'm a lactard, so I use soymilk in my coffee and on my cereal... other than that, I stay away. I do eat goat's cheese though!

  • My brother recently started drinking the almond's milk and really likes it. I haven't tried it yet

  • I despise it and it kills my stomach so I don't touch the stuff.  Baby has to get his calcium from the milkshakes I drink:)
  • I drink cow's milk with no hormones or antibiotics. I have seen the commmercials lately for almond milk...I've never tried it, but it sounds delicious!

  • We get organic cow's milk for me, but I only really use it for cereal and coffee.  MH hates the aftertaste of dairy milk, so he usually uses soy milk (for his oatmeal and smoothies).  However, like beachbubbles said, studies have shown that soy (all soy, not just the milk) has estrogenic properties and can shrink men's brains (GASP!).  So we're actually weaning him onto almond milk, but it's not the cheapest thing.  Almond milk, however, tastes great in my opinion.
  • We use cow's milk from a local dairy for drinking, cooking and cold cereal.  I use soy or almond milk for my coffee every morning, and for oatmeal and smoothies when I have them.

  • We only buy Horizon organic milk, regular, no fat reduction. It is mostly for my 8 year old. She does really well with it. I think it is a good balance for her. She gets hyper on sugar. Milk seems to fix that. I don't know the biochemistry. It is definitely good for her mood. She's tall and healthy.

My H and I only consume it as part of something else (oatmeal, recipes, smoothies).

I quit drinking milk at whatever age girls start thinking that they are fat (pre-teen years). When I was 19, I started having problems with food reactions due to sulfites. No doctor could figure out that sulfites were the problem for a decade! Yes, bad undiagnosed stomach/GI problems for years. Once I knew the problem, I found Rick Williams website. It said that milk was one of the safest things for people with a sulfite problem. At that time, I was trying to gain weight. So, I started drinking Horizon organic every day. Now that my weight is up, I don't need to drink milk.

  • LOL I feel like such a heathen right now...the milk I drink isn't anything close to organic. In fact, I've never so much as seen organic milk in the grocery stores where I live. Tongue Tied

IMO, almond milk (unsweetened) tastes a lot like rice milk.  I actually like it with my cereal!

  • Why is soy milk bad? Sometimes I feel like EVERYTHING is pretty much bad for you and we just shouldn't eat or drink anything. It's frusturating in a way...

Anyway, I became lactose intolerant a couple of years ago and now I drink soy milk (Silk). MH drinks organic 1%. I never tried almond milk but I wouldn't be able to use it because MH is allergic to nuts and we substitute soy milk for recipes that call for milk that both of us are going to eat.

  • I haven't drank milk since I was a baby...just don't like it.  However, almond milk sounds like it might be worth a try :)

  • I drink all of it. I like regular cow's milk, but have been trying to cut back since my plan is not to give it to my daughter. If she can't have it, I won't be drinking it either. We'll see how that goes, because I like certain things with real milk (brownies & cookies Stick out tongue). Right now I have 1% organic (from Costco) in my refrigerator, but I drink non-organic milk too. Raw nut milk is tasty and really easy to make. My mom recently made me some cashew milk that I had with homemade granola. It was delish!
  • not sure if it's cow's milk or not, but it's lactose free milk.
  • I NEVER drink it but I do put it on my cereal, DH does full fat cow's milk so that's what goes on my cereal. I HATE the taste of milk, I've tried rice milk and it was terrible. I haven't tried any thing else. I heard with breastfeeding soy milk isn't that great for the baby.. I never researched it though, because honestly I get plenty of diary other ways... ice cream is my friend! :)
