Update on my brother in the hospital

First off, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers the other day. :)

I got a call from my mom who had spoken with my brother's nurses. All his scans and bloodwork came back fine and they released him from the hospital. He hasn't had a seizure since the day he was hospitalized.

Because his bloodwork was *not* normal when he originally came in to the hospital, they think it might have been the medication that he's been on. He's always had to take meds, but they had him on a few things because he was getting agitated and the nurses think he may have been accidentally overmedicated. Our family is discussing this with the board of directors for the home he lives in, and with the psychologist/doctor who prescribes the meds for the people who live there. His deteriorating mental state would sort of fit in with the meds being given too much.

It freaks me out big time that they would change his meds without ever consulting my mother, who is a nurse and has always had a say in what they do with him in regards to his health. We've been trying to get him placed in a nice home up here so we can be closer but it's taken years and we've gotten absolutely nowhere :(.

I guess for now, just please keep your fingers crossed and your thoughts positive that everything will go smoothly with him until we can find a way to get him up here.

Re: Update on my brother in the hospital

  • So glad he's out of the hospital!  I hope they can get his meds adjusted and find a home closer for him, I know that would take alot of your minds.  Lots of good thoughts for your family...

  • That's really unsettling that they would be switching his meds around like that. I hope your mom has luck w/ getting through to them that they need to communicate things better until you can find a nice place nearby. This must be so tough, I can't imagine.
  • Wow!  That certaintly does sound like the home was taking a lot of liberty in changing his meds without consultation from your family.  I hope your mom's message comes through this time, and that this doesn't happen again to your brother.  I also hope you are able to move him closer to you guys sooner rather than later.

And thanks for the update.  I'm definitely glad and relieved that he's doing much better now and out of the hospital.

It is *extremely* unsettling... especially because, up to this point, the home was more than we could ever hope for. He's been there for 17 years and we've never had an issue with them. They employ him and give him spending money (which he uses to buy stuff from the vending machine and clothes for himself, or coloring books and crayons... he's artistic :) ). They take them out to Miami Heat games and to the mall, they make sure everyone is socializing and healthy. It is mind blowing to us that this happened.

  • I'm glad to hear he's doing much better & hope that something like this doesn't happen again!  That's horrible it even had to happen.
  • Thanks for keeping us updated, very glad to hear he's ok, hope they get things straightened out!
  • I'm glad that he's out of the hospital. Keep us posted!
  • Overmedicating?  OMG, AT.  That is so unsettling.  I am so sorry to hear this.  Hopefully things will come together smoothly and quickly for you, so you guys can have him closer.
