Census question regarding race...

Did anyone else notice that one of the race options on the Census form was "black, African America, or negro" ??? Indifferent  I've never seen that term written down or used besides DH's 90 year old grandparents.

Re: Census question regarding race...

  • I didn't. I clearly didn't read it close enough--I dislike that my option was WHITE... and not Caucasian.

  • I did and I was just as surprised about it.
    Mom to:
Miles (6 year old Maine C00n mix), Boots (5 year old Lab mix), Darla (4 year old GSD/Collie mix), Frankie (1.5 year old DSH mix), Peanut (15 months old - 09/11), and Bean (arriving Feb 2013).
  • I know right, this form hasn't been changed since the 50s or something.  I'm surprised the other main option didn't say "white, caucasian, or cracker"!

  • We just got ours in last night and I haven't opened it yet.

Maybe they are trying to make sure that everyone will be able to discern the options?

I'm really annoyed that there is just white. I won't be checking that off. White is not my ethnicity, it's the color of my skin.

  • Iit was actually added back on in response to a panel recommendation (don't remember what the panel was called, but the members are all black) due in part to the number of responses during the last census that in the line for other wrote in "negro" instead of selecting black.

Either way apparently they couldn't win on this one.

  • A friend of mine from Bolivia posted an interesting question about the census the other day. She married an American (white). They have two daughters.

Q.5: is this person of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish ORIGIN?

No, not of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish ORIGIN
    Yes, Mexican, Mexican Am., Chicano.
    Yes, Puerto Rican.
    Yes, Cuban.
Yes, Another Hispanic, Latino or Spanish Origin. (here you can write what you are and i wrote BOLIVIAN for myself.)

    Q. 6 is about RACE.... so i wrote WHITE and LATINO for the girls.

My question is... what is the right answer for Q.5 ???? are they BOLIVIANS as well although they are only 50%?

  • lmao @ cracker! I always feel like I'm way more beige than white. I did not see the negro part. WTF?!

I don't think there was really a way to answer if you are mixed, and that's stupid, considering how many people are.

  • Oh, turns out, choosing two is the correct way to indicate mixed race.
