Running Programs?

I noticed a few of you are runners and I'm looking to train for a small race, maybe a 5K as soon as my dr. clears me to run. Any suggestions on how to even start a training program like that? I've never really been a runner, but I'm setting various fitness goals for myself this summer in an attempt to finally lose some significant weight (kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, and running are the goals!)

Re: Running Programs?

  • When I started running I wasn't very athletic, so I took the process nice and slow. I used Hal Higdon's guide to training for a 5k and a half marathon. He has guides based on your running ability (novice, intermediate or advanced). This is the training guide for 5k beginners:

And I also did exercises along with running (hiking and rock climbing are my favorites.) I started running back in October '06 and know I'm looking to train for a full marathon.

    Good luck!!

  • Thanks for the great info Alaina! The program looks scary. Running 1.5 miles the first week, I don't know if I can do!

Speaking of hiking, I'm planning some hiking days this summer. Any thoughts on good places to go?

  • I would hardly qualify myself as a "runner" or even a "jogger", but I've heard good things about the Couch Potato to 5k program, I've seen some recs on the H & F board and might try it out myself.

Oooh this is good! Couch potato is more like it when describing me. I work out a few days a week, but I'm 40 pounds heavier than my goal weight so the other program scared me a little bit. I'll check the H&F board for some info on it. Where do you live? I'd love to do the program with someone else as there's a chance I'd actually do it!

You can google it as well. I'm in the Newton area, I haven't started the program, I've been using the workout room at our place to get back into shape.
