My peepers were peeped....

I hadn't had an eye exam since I was nine so I figured it was time to go and since I have good insurance I wanted to take advantage of it since I could tell my eyes were getting bad.  Oh the joys of staring at a computer for close to 9 hours a day.

Anyway, my sight isnt bad but I do have to get a mild prescription pair of glasses.  I havent worn glasses since a short 6 months when I was 7 or 8 years old.  Any tips? Things I should know?

Sounds like I totally stupid question, I know but this is completley foreign to me.

TIA!

Re: My peepers were peeped....

  • Hmmm...it's been forever since I wore glasses.  I think when I first started wearing glasses I had a bit of a headache the first time wearing them from the adjustment to actually being able to see.  But, other than that, I don't really remember anything specific about it.

  • Make sure you are "fitted" for the frames, a good eye doc place will make sure they are correct for your eye and ear spacing, face width, and nose placement - just so they are as comfortable as possible.

Make sure your eyelashes and brows don't hit the lenses...annoying!

The scratch resistant lenses are totally worth it...

I wear contacts now...but wore glasses for 5 years before that.

  • Make sure you like them!... I bought a pair and just was eh on them and now wish I had gone 'funkier' with my frames...

Are you near or far sighted and do you have to wear them all the time?

I guess I really don't have many tips, sorry! I've been wearing contacts more than glasses since I was 11-12.

Are you near or far sighted and do you have to wear them all the time? I am near sighted and its just a slight adjustment so no he said that I dont have to wear them all the time (but most likely will because it will be nice to be able to see) they are mainly to drive

This.  I also get glare reducer on mine b/c I am typically wearing them at night, at the computer or watching TV.

Whenever I get new glasses/contacts, I tend to be headachey for the first few days when adjusting to the new prescription.

Yes, this!!  This drove me nuts when I wore glasses, and it's just worse if you wear mascara.

DH really likes it when I wear my glasses.

I agree with PP just make sure your fitted and really like them. Don't get them if your ...eh...

And don't forget to post pics of you in your specs!!

  • I usually get headaches/vertigo when I get a new prescription. Definitely get the scratch resistant coating! I had the anti-glare coating once and HAAAATED it because it makes the lenses sort of iridescent, which is just plain tacky. And that shows smudges more. I usually end up wearing mascara even when I'm at home just because my lashes touch and grease up my lenses if I don't. I agree with everyone else, make sure they are fitted correctly. Your dr. shouldn't charge if you need to go back to adjust. Invest in a good hard sided case and cleaning cloth if those don't come with them! I'd also recommend paying more for a pair you love vs whatever your insurance covers (which is usually not much!). I've hardly worn contacts since meeting DH - he prefers the glasses!
  • I paid for the scratch resistant lenses bc they said that was the only way that it would be covered under "warranty"  I didnt get the glare whatever stuff because it was 1. too expensive and 2. I wanted to make sure I liked the frames a lot before making a large investment in them.

In total it cost me 90 bucks because my insurance covered $250.  From what I heard, that is decent.

  • Glad they aren't that bad!  I don't where contacts or spectacles at all, so no advice here!

Good luck finding a cute pair!

  • I'm a little late to this, but I also second the scratch-resistant coating (which I saw you already got). I'm near-sighted also, and wear them mostly for driving, TV or whatnot, and I wish I had gotten the glare-resistant coating. I had them on my last pair, but I had more money then, so I didn't get it this time. I think when I go in the next year or two, I'll pay extra for it. DH has to wear his all the time, and doesn't have the glare-resistant coating either, and it doesn't bother him, so I think it varies from person to person.

I also would recommend keeping your eye-glass case nearby at all times. Sounds dumb, but with my last pair, they were often used as a headband when I wasn't using them, and it seemed to kind of stretch them out a bit. So with my new pair, I try to keep my case on my desk so I see it and put them away when not wearing them (especially since I didn't pay for the scratch-resistant coating - dumb me!).

  • Love all the advice! I would only add: always carry a cleaning fabric thingy.

Now that I'm wearing my glasses all the time (my eyes get tired faster with the current nighttime activities) it's so annoying that I have to clean them all the time and the cleaning thingy is always in the other side of the house! (we only have one, must buy more)

  • It's been a while for me, too.  Here's the advice from what I remember.

When you have sinus pressure, it will make it harder to wear the glasses if they sit on your sinus area.  This used to make my eyes water.

Wherever they touch your skin will be more prone to acne, so keep your glasses clean and take extra care of those areas of your face.

Get a nice case, wiping cloth and spray.  Smudgy glasses are annoying.

Get a glare screen for your monitor or angle your screen because the glasses can add to the glare.

If the lenses seem too strong at first, give them a week so you can adjust.  If they are still too strong, go back.

And you will find yourself pushing them back up on your nose when they're not there!

  • Only clean them with the cloth that comes with 'em...I scratched the hell out of my last pair using what I thought was soft materials (towels) and now I have that little cloth with me every time I wear my glasses.
  • You guys are awesome!  Thanks so much for all of the great advice.  Seriously, you told me things that I would never have even thought of.
