Seeds - What's the difference?
Is there a difference between seeds that you see at stores like Target, Walmart or the Dollar Store and seeds that you would get from a nursery or online?
Re: Seeds - What's the difference?
I mean, there might be a difference in selection & stuff, but they'll still germinate.
eta: and sometimes the cheaper packets of seeds have fewer seeds in them. but they'll still "work"
Yes, they'll all grow. Some might have more in them or less. Some might germinate better or worse.
Ecologically, there's a big difference. Most of what you buy at the store come from 1-2 giant agra-businesses. They control the world's seed market. They have genetically modified a lot of seeds so that they cannot be collected and replanted (ie you have to buy more seeds form them.) They are narrowing seed production, leaving breeds vulnerable to blight, etc (think Irish Potato famine.) They also participate in some pretty shady practices abroad, threatening ecological stability and sustainable farming.
I prefer to buy heirloom varieties that have adapted to the environment and are ecologically sound. Plus you get WAY more interesting varieties! Rareseeds.com is awesome.
To be clear for OP, you can also get seeds from Giant Agra-Business via mail order catalogs & nurseries...not just big box stores.
Seed Savers Exchange is another heirloom seed source, if you're interested.
Yes, true.
