Washer & Dryer?

Trying to decide between a top loading machine without an agitator and a front loader. The front loader is about $700 more expensive for everything combined. Any suggestions on which is better?

Re: Washer & Dryer?

  • We're in the process of researching washers and dryers b/c we'll be buying a new set when our house is done.  We're set on a top loader w/o the agitator...I just don't want to mess w/having to leave the door open on the front loader to avoid mold and smells.  If we had more room in the new utility room, I'd be a little more open to a front loader, but for the space we'll be working with, I'm going for a top loader...just not sure which one yet.
Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • I don't normally post here, but thought I'd chime in.

We got a new front loading W/D a couple months ago and absolutely love it. Our clothes have never seemed so clean (we rented a W/D before from out apartment complex, so that could be why too) and it does use less water.

We didn't look into a top loader because we move a lot and we might have to stack them later on.

Leaving the door open took awhile to get used to, but it's not big deal now. If you don't want to leave the door open, just wipe out underneath the seal after you're done (takes less than 10 seconds) and wash your washer once or twice a month (either with vinegar or bleach).

We got the Kenmore Elite HE3 steam W/D.

  • We have had a front loading washer for over a year and I love love love it. I never have a problem with mold. I leave the door open most of the time, just out of habit now.

I use a vinegar rinse instead of fabric softener after every load, so maybe this helps. Watered down vinegar with a few drops of essential oils for a nice smell afterwards is a cheap and easy fabric softener that is very eco friendly too. Try it once with your towels and you'll be amazed at how much more they absorb after they're rinsed clean from all the detergent they usually still have on them when they come out. (And no, there is no vinegar smell after they're done!)
