Just got a MacBook Pro!

But...I completely forgot to ask the super friendly guy who helped me at the Apple store about the battery.  Is it OK to leave it plugged in while I'm using it?  Or should I get a full charge, unplug, and plug it back in when needed?

(Yes, I'm pretty much a lurker.  But I know you ladies know your stuff!  TIA!)

Re: Just got a MacBook Pro!

  • You can do either. It should come with a full charge so feel free to run that battery down and then plug it in. In fact it is sometimes good to run it all the way down so the battery can get a full charge. My DH & I often have our plugged in so it has a full charge when we will be on the go.

    Congrat's!!

  • Jealous. My little MacBook seems so old and sad....
  • Thanks for the response!  I actually ended up finding a Mac forum and discovered there seems to be mixed opinions on the matter.  I did let it run down to "calibrate" the battery, though.  Apparently this should be done about once a month...?  Anyone have any thoughts on that?
  • That sounds about right, but you just have to keep it in the back of your mind, we have our MBP run down about once every 3 months. She's on pretty much 24-7. Our's takes a beating as it's DH's Main machine and he's a mac tech. One of his friends just bought a brand new PC laptop and his only has 2-3 hours of battery life compared to the MBP's.
  • I use my MacBook whilst it charges all the time. I also shut it down every night.

If you don't want it to charge while you use it, then do what I do. I like to charge it at night whilst I sleep. I mostly do this because in the summer, I like to go on the deck and have my coffee outside and check my email.

Do the battery calibration once every few months but don't worry about it too much.  There is pretty much never a need to shut your laptop down; just put it to sleep when you're not using it. You should try to put (at least) one or two charge cycles (the equivalent of a full discharge and then charge which can be 100% - 0% - 100% once or, for example, 100% - 75% - 100% four times) on your battery every month. Feel free, however, to work with the computer plugged. Old lithium ion battery were expected to last for about 300 charge cycles, but the new ones in the macbook pro are expected to last for about 3-4 times that. So as long as you occasionally run your laptop off your battery, do whatever you like.
