Arborvitaes and a fence?

Hi everyone - I am new here.  We moved into our house about 7 months ago and we are trying to work on the back / side yard now.  We have a very small side yard and our neighbors are VERY close to us in the back.  We are thinking abot putting arborvitaes towards the back of the yard...  we are trying to hide the eyesore of the blue house behind us and we have restrictions of 6 feet so we thought natural was the way to go.

What do we put on the side of the yard?  I was thinking about a wooden fence with vines (I like the Dutchman's Pipe) but we aren't sure how it is going to look.

Do we also need to put a fence in the back behind the trees? And what would you suggest in the front of the yard?  I have attached some pictures...

Our yard is the part that is all soil - we just put down grass seed and next to the house (where it is all muddy) we just put down river rock, next year we will think about doing plants or something.  This year we wanted to focus on the ugly house behind us and the hideous fence

Thanks in advance

Re: Arborvitaes and a fence?

  • well since we have dogs a fenced in yard was a must for us, but even without dogs, a 6 foot privacy fence can go a long way for making your yard more defined and keeping eyes within it, rather than looking beyond at the ugly neighbor houses (all the houses surrounding us are fug).

  • My fence is lined with leyland cypress and Thuja green giants.  I planted three more thujas this morning. Big Smile

My back fence is split rail with wire to keep the dogs in so the trees do a good job of hiding it.
