Re: a couple questions dance classes for a 2year old

  • Hey there, I don't have a little one of my own yet, but I danced from preschool through college and I used to work in the administration at a large ballet school, so I'd be happy to offer my suggestions.

To be honest, you may have trouble finding dance classes for a child as young as two. Most ballet schools don't accept students until three years old, and even at three, the classes are mostly about getting the little ones used to the classroom environment and teaching them a love of music and movement. They may learn a few of the basic ballet positions and steps around age four or five, but serious classical ballet training doesn't usually start until about age six or seven. I think it's great to start looking for a good school now, but I'd probably wait to enroll her until the fall when she might be closer to three.

As for local studios, I'd definitely recommend Orlando Ballet School. They're the only local school that's affiliated with a full professional company. I know that doesn't seem important for a toddler, but if she decides to continue on with her training, it makes sense to choose a school where she'll receive good training at any age. Unlike some less professional schools, all the ballet classes follow a uniform syllabus that ensures that students develop strength at the appropriate pace and order. They have three locations, but I think the one in Longwood would probably be the closest.

Hope this info. if helpful, and I hope when your little one is ready that she enjoys learning to dance. It was definitely a very special part of my childhood.

  • Hi there- I currently have my 4 year old in ballet class and I would agree with Diane, most schools don't take kids until they are at least 3. We actually put Taylor in right when she turned 3 and it was a lost cause. It wasn't until about 1 year later she was ready and into it. It's obviously worth a try but don't be too discouraged if it doesn't work out yet. My daughters school accepts younger kids but most of them cry and scream for the whole class which even if your kid isn't crying, it doesn't make them want to stay a whole lot.

As for swimming lessons we are looking into it as well. I've heard great things about Sharks and Minnows and iffy things about YMCA (very pricey). I actually did find a friend that was a certified swim instructor who is going to do it for us instead and we'll pay her for 1 on 1 classes the same as 1 on 8 classes at Sharks and Minnows. Good luck.
