New Home

We're in the market and will be buying a home sometime in the next couple of months.  We would really like to help decrease our carbon foot print.

Suggestions on things we can do in our new home to make this happen?

Re: New Home

  • If you buy a home with green features (energy star, solar panels, passive solar, etc) that helps.  If not, buying a modest house will help long term as well.

Projects to do once you are in are things to make your home more energy efficient - insulation, energy star, etc.  You can also use green products (cleaning, cosmetics) and work to use sustainable food.

  • Also consider location; decreasing your driving would also reduce your footprint.
  • make sure that you have space and sunlight for a garden.
  • Are you building or buying existing?  If the later how old?

As far as your home itself goes it's all about energy efficiency.  Insulation (everywhere) is the most cost effective thing you can pay for.  As far as the life of the home goes an efficient HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system is the next best thing.
