I am going to be visiting San Diego beginning April 13 for a week. I was looking for some must-see sights and restaurant suggestions from the locals. We will be staying downtown. I will be traveling with 4 of my girlfriends and we are all leaving our DH's at home and looking for a good time! TIA

Re: Hello!
Will you have a car? If not, you should look into getting one. San Diego is a great city but things are spread out.
Since you're staying Downtown you'll be close to the Gaslamp (a big spot for resturants and bars) and Balboa Park (museums, zoo; http://www.balboapark.org/, http://www.sandiegozoo.org/).
Hillcrest (http://www.hillquest.com/) isn't too far away either. It's thought to be the gay neighborhood and it's a great place. LOTS of shopping and restaurants.
You'll also want to check out Coronado Island. You can drive or there is a ferry...but the walk to their little "downtown" area with restaurants and shopping its a bit away from the ferry. I'd go with driving. Park near The Hotel Del (http://www.hoteldel.com/), check out the hotel then walk around...check out the beach, then go shopping and have a bite to eat on Orange St.
La Jolla is just north of San Diego and has beautiful beaches, good restaurants and shopping (some EXPENSIVE!).
If you want to shop there are outlets in Carlsbad (North; http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=66) and some South near the border (be careful!!! http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=76) and Fashion Valley mall is a large outdoor mall with a wide variety of shopping as is Horton Plaza that is downtown (I prefer Fashiopn Valley).
Little Italy (http://littleitalysd.com/splash/index.asp) has a great farmer's market on Saturday mornings and a great selection of restaurants.
I could go on about food but won't. Have you heard of yelp.com (http://www.yelp.com/sandiego)? This is my favorite place to look for places to eat...see what you girls feel like each day and search on yelp by neighborhood and type of food...you'll find something great!
I hope this helps and you all have a WONDERFUL trip to our beautiful city!
My fav place for dessert or Sunday brunch is:

The bigger location is downtown.
