travel question

DH and I are travelling to Jamaica next month for a belated Honeymoon. I changed both my name and address with the DMV, but only got a paper "update card" and not an actual hard photo ID with the changes. Has anyone had experience using the paper cards with airport security/customs?

I'm thinking I may want to just suck it up and pay the $12 for a new hard card to not have to deal with the hassle of it not matching my passport. I just dont know how accepting they are of the paper versions. DH also has a paper card with just an address change, I feel like that is probably less of a big deal than the names not matching, but I'm wondering if we should just get him a new driver's license as well.

Any input would be appreciated!

Re: travel question

  • When I changed my name at the DMV and got the paper card, the guy asked me if I planned on doing any international traveling because if so, he highly recommended getting the actual card instead.  Since I only had a few months to go until my card expired, I just waited out and I wasn't doing any traveling.  So to answer your question, yes I would get the hard card.

  • i just posted on the travel board and they claim that i only need a passport, not a drivers license. i always used both. so now, i dont know what to do. both of our licenses dont expire until 2011 so we wouldnt be getting new cards any time soon.

  • Really?  I got married in Bermuda last year and I had to show both my drivers license and passport.  Granted, we traveled by cruise ship so maybe there's different requirements but I had to show both each time we entered a new port.  Personally, I would spend the extra couple of dollars for the peace of mind.

  • no advice on your question ... but where are you headed to, in jamaica? we just got back from honeymoon #3 a couple weeks ago. had a lovely time.

  • We travel frequently and only ever use a passport, you do not need a driver?s license for travel.

  • while on my lunch today, i just went ahead and got it anyway. i asked the DMV person and she said that yes definitely both my husband and i should have the hard drivers license vs the hard and paper update. but then again, im sure she could have said that just to get the $12. but for the peace of mind for both of it, it was worth it.

flamoogle- we are going to Sandals Whitehouse. where did you stay?
