Did you watch it? What did you think?
If you didnt' see it and haven't heard of it I'll give you my brief description. In 2008 (I think) Huntington, WV was ranked at the unhealthiest city in the US. So, Jamie Oliver decided to come to town and try to help change the way people and schools in the area think about unhealthy food. Last night was the first episode.
I was very shocked to see that the kids in the elementary school were being served pizza for breakfast...not to mention all of the other bad foods for lunch. I can't believe parents don't have a problem with the menu. It seemed like the majority of the kids were eating it. I think I'd be packing a lunch for my child.
I was also shocked that the school system didn't seem to be taking steps, prior to Jamie's arrival, to fix things. It seemed like he met a lot of resistance from people. For example, he met with the lady who was in charge of the food programs for cabell county schools. She explained that there is a lot of crap to go through b/c of the USDA regulations which I think stinks. BUT, I would have been a lot happier if she were saying things like, "We'd like to make healthier meals for the schools, but aren't sure how to do it with these guidelines. Please help." She seemed to have more of an attitude like, "Well we're meeting the guidelines and we aren't changing things because its too hard."
disclaimer: I know this is all part of TV and they probably twist things to make it more "entertaining" so the way these people are portrayed might not be completely accurate.
Re: Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution
I watched and felt the exact same way you did. It was hard to watch the cooks and principal act like they didn't even care about what they were putting into the kids. As long as they met their guidelines they were happy. I remember when Huntington was named the unhealthiest city. I don't know if I was out of the loop, part of the minority, or just living under a rock, but when I lived in Huntington I thought it seemed like an active town. The nice walking path at the park, the YMCA, the great fitness center on campus (which is even nicer now), and people riding bikes and walking everywhere.
I am anxious to see how the show goes on the next episode.
