Community Service Projects? Ideas please? Help??

I am taking over the National Jr Honor Society at my school. This club is based on "community service" projects and whatnot. I'm trying to come up with some ideas... a few I've had so far....

Special Olympics

Senior Center

Give Kids the World

Howard Philips Center

Anyone have any ideas or good organizations we could help??

Re: Community Service Projects? Ideas please? Help??

  • There is Lighthouse of Central Florida.  They offer vision rehab services for the central florida area.
  • We have done One Warm Coat, Ronald McDonald House, Toys for Tots, senior centers, letters to the military, etc. We also had a program dealing with backpacks for students (I can't remember the name)  as well as a connection with an African tribe. We gave them crocs, raised funds, etc.

I know we have done more, but I am not thinking of the names of the programs.

  • We volunteered at one of the Disney Races to hand out water and snacks during the race to runners.  It was fun and we got free tickets to Disney.  Well, that may not be a good idea for kids (and you may have to be 18+ to do it).  But we still do it and enjoy it.
  • My DD and I volunteer at Give Kids the World - fabulous organization!  But it is a bit of a committment and a trek from Orlando (it's in southeast Kissimmee near Medieval Times).  We volunteer every other Sunday from 5-9.  It is also sometimes difficult to see these children suffering, so make sure that the kids who are involved in this can handle the life/death issues (and you are not allowed to ask the children any questions about their condition unless they bring the subject up first).

Since this is school related, I would also recommend "Room to Read."  It's an organization that works to build and supply libraries and schools in underdeveloped nations.  I am sure that you being involved with students understands how important literacy and education is and what a hand up it is rather than just a hand out.  The website address is www DOT roomtoread DOT org.

    Hope this helps!

Oh, and realize that with GKTW, there are restrictions based on age. If they are under 17 they must be accompanied by a guardian when they volunteer.  And anyone under 18 must have a guardian attend the orientation session with them.  They also have to get 3 letters of recommendation.

  • Well we did an event for Coalition for the Homeless when I was in college.  Also, you may want to try the Blood Bank.

  • Take a look at the Hands on Orlando website.  They are a clearing house for Central Florida charities.  They can also help set up projects for you

  • Thanks guys! Lots of great info! We do volunteer @ Give Kids the World already (I dont know how we get around the 18 years old thing, but somehow we do?) and I like the other ideas! I'll be looking them up :) Thanks again!
  • Sorry I'm a bit late to reply, but if you contact the Heart of Florida United Way their  Volunteer Center can give you a lot of resources for Community Service.  Their number is 407-835-0900

     Have fun in the community!
