Cloth diapering and why? I am going to be the first out of family and friends to use them and am wondering what are a favorite! I have been doing a lot of research, but was hoping for additional input. TIA!
Re: What's your favorite...
I don't CD yet but I've had a lot of encounters with CDs.
I hate pockets. A lot of people love them and find them to be the easiest system to use, but I can't stand stuffing.
I love prefolds. They're cheap, "old school" so grandparents probably already know how to use them, and you can then spend money on really cute covers.
My favorite, though, are fitteds like BuBuBeBe, Thirsties Fab Fitteds, Good Mamas, Little Boopers, Graham Bearwear, etc. Love, love, love! But they are soooo pricey and you do need covers to go over them if you are going out (but they can be worn around the house without covers).
I recommend getting a trial pack from Nicki's Diapers, Abby's Lane, or Jillian's Drawers, or finding a local CD group or class you can attend. It's hard to pick the right diaper for you until you've had a chance to see and feel them all. I thought I would love pockets like bumGenius until I actually used one. Also get a variety because all babies are different. What works for one may not work for another so variety is important.
While I agree with you I want to add that there are tons of different types now... and we are used to using disposable diapers. It used to be that babysitting you would learn how to change cloth diapers, just as now you learn to change disposable. Some people can't even change them... I have some friends who would be clueless even with simple diapers. Also mom/grandma would generally have been there to help but with moms having babies later, and with the global nature of our world now, we have lost that connection with our 'roots' and our background. I was cloth diapered, and I think that I know how to do it, but I will admit that there are so many different brands out there now that I am not sure that I would know how to use all of them right off the back.
I've used every type other than flats and my favorites have been All-in-ones. They're the most expensive type but we sell them after DD outgrows them (on diaperswappers.com) They go on and off just like a disposable, you just wash them instead of throwing them away. We use Bum Genius
