Food Revolution

Did anyone watch the sneak peak last night?  I think I am going to LOVE this show!  I was a bit turned off by the waste of food in the episode (when he was cooking a week's worth of one families food), but when you think about it- it's crap food that is probably better being wasted then eaten (even if most of it looked sooooo yummy!).

Anyway, if you didn't catch it you can see the full 2-hour episode on Friday on ABC.  I highly recommend it, especially if you have school aged kids!  I know most of us are extremely conscious of what we eat and what we feed our children, but I think it's still a great show and a great movement you can support by watching.  Even if it is hosted by some crazy British guy.  :)

Re: Food Revolution

  • I watched it and pretty much thought it was amazing. I can't imagine how much crap that family ate out of a deep fat fryer.

The lunches at the school I work at are exactly like the ones on the show. There's really not a healthy option either. It makes me sad because these kids are disabled and most already have health issues. One of my middle school clients easily weighs 200 pounds. All I see him eat is the crap food and leaves the small amount of fruit and veggies on his plate.

I definitely will keep watching it. I think this show has a great message and could be motivating for people to change their habits.

  • I only got to watch the first half because that's all my DVR recorded!  I loved it though.  I have Jamie's cookbook by the same name and I'm really enjoying it.  I am a teacher and, like others have said, the food they serve at school is just a travesty.

  • I just posted on EFF :)  I loved it.  I hope that it starts to educate not only the people in the show but those around the country that have no understanding of what they're putting in their bodies.

  • It's also on hulu! I just watched it yesterday. And I love Jaime Oliver. I was so turned off by many of the reactions and comments from the school cooks, the radio show host and others. What an uphill battle he has. I really hope he can help. Our schools and many of the people in this country need it!

  • I had not heard of it. Can't wait to check it out! I'll add it to the DVR.

  • I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I keep hearing about this deep fat fryer. I don't even own a deep fat fryer! I don't understand that part. [:/]

She made her own chips... and she made her own donuts (which DH was a little jealous of...) but it got out of control.

    Possible spoilers below...

Dh and I watched it last night. I love the premise of the show. DH swears that there wasn't a cafeteria option at his school in elementary school, and that he had to bring his own lunch. Where I grew up, in a 95% in poverty and 75% qualifying for free lunch and several more reduced lunch, cafeteria lunch is the only way some kids got to eat. My mom almost always packed my lunch (I was also a really fussy eater... still am) and I would only get lunch when it was chicken -- real chicken. We were both really proud of the mom with the deep fryer for realizing that there was a problem. At first DH was like WTH is wrong with her??? And then when we both realized that this is how she was raised, what the situation is like in her community, and that she was just a product of everyone else... we thought she was pretty cool to take part in this.  I was sad to see that while there was fruit on every single child's plate, no one ate it. As a nanny/babysitter, I cringed that no one had the foresight to cute the apples in to wedges...

  • Also notice how the deep fryer woman did this while her husband was gone?  I wonder if she's been wanting to make a change for a while but he was a hindrance.  I know a lot of women who cook to make their husband's happy even if they don't like it.  Her kids didn't seem too thrilled with their diets so I didn't get the impression it was them not wanting to eat right.  I wonder if they'll get back to her so we can see what her husband's reaction is.

This is so true. I have such a hard time with cooking/meal planning in general when dh is around. It a MAJOR challenge to eat ethical and nutritious food because he just doesn't really seem to give a hoot. I've talked to a lot of other Mom's who have this same issue.

I think for the husband it will be hard as he is a truck driver, gone for 2-3 weeks and what is there to eat when you are on the road? All he'll be eating is fast food, and hopefully he'll be ok with a fresh cooked meal (I know I would be). He also gets no excersize driving... it has to be one of the worst jobs to have healthwise.

  • hmmm..I really want to see the show!

On a side note, last year on fourth of July we made fried chicken..and it was  soo good. But I felt so bad for making fried food. It was the first time I have ever made anything deep fried...EVER. I felt so guilty..but it was really good.

But doughnuts..hmm..I can see your husband's jealousy Wink

I do believe a lot of it is "cultural.." I heard the show was filmed in West Virginia.  This is a gross generalization, but I guess I could see the fryer coming out more there..than in other places..I don't know why I think that though.

I heard about the apples too. That makes me sad...it was with the pizza choice and the apples just got thrown away right?

  • I really need to watch this show!  And I totally understand other's trouble with cooking for DH.  When I first learned about Meatless Mondays I got excited then realized I couldn't do it since DH has to have meat in every meal and it's not always as easy as not making the meat for myself.  Then I realized that I don't have to do it on Mondays and do it on Thursdays since he's usually out with friends in the evening.  I'll have to go find the show on Hulu!
