We have a pile of old logs/wood that we pulled up while landscaping last year. They've been sitting outside near our driveway. DH *thinks* he saw termites, and said that the wood was falling apart. However, we have a wood fence nearby, our porch is wood, etc, and there does not appear to be damage there. Maybe the old wood was just rotting from wind/rain/snow/elements? This freaked me out, though, and we someone is coming tomorrow to take a look around the property. Has anyone ever had termites? Do they travel fast? Can they get inside your house? It's not like we leave the doors open or anything. Agh! IKm totally cluless and scared!
Re: Termites?
I've had them. In my first house they were in the house, but hadn't done any damage yet. I had the house treated in order to sell.
In my current home I had them in the yard, but not the house. I had the house treated and have a contract with the company. They come out every year to inspect. The house treatment is guaranteed for ten years. I paid around $1500 for it.
Don't let them sell you the termite stations. They are a rip off and are hit or miss. If you have them, you want the treatment where they drill into your foundation and inject the chemical.
Just about every house gets them around here. We also get something called wood beetles that is even harder to get rid of. Usually you can see the termite droppings (like really small coffee grounds or dirt) and the holes in the wood. They look round and curvy-ish (a google image search might be best).
It's not the end of the world, I've never seen a house fall down because of termite damage. But when they swarm, they're gross (like big ants but with long wings).
We tented our house two years ago, which can be expensive ($2000 for our 900 sq ft house) and they're already back. No need to worry too much though, it's not an urgent thing that has to happen immediately. There are alternative treatments like orange oil but I hear they're not as effective.
