pet insurance?

Hi Ladies!

We are researching options for Bentley when it comes to insurance. If you have a dog, do you have a plan? If so, with who? how much? what does it cover? do you like it? If not, why not?

I have several friends who have recommended using petsmart for the first year because he needs so MANY shots... but I really like the vet we brought him too off clint moore in boca, and they would obviously need an independent policy for him.

He's my fairytale, a dream when I'm not sleeping.

Re: pet insurance?

  • I've been talking a lot about insurance with people lately. Honestly, Charlotte hasn't cost us much at all. We've had her almost a year and have only taken her to the vet a couple times for routine stuff, and is hasn't been that pricey.

I've never looked into insurance, so I'd be curious what the prices are like and if we should do it.

  • My job offers pet insurance that you can add, but a lot of my co-workers say it hasn't been worth it because it only covers certain things, like the routine stuff, and very little of the out of the ordinary stuff.

I have only looked at pet insurance once and I didn't think it was worth it. My two haven't cost us that much. (yearly shots is the highest cost) I would wait and see what your first year brings you. You can get insurance any time for them. If he is a pricey dog and has to go to the vet a lot I would get it but otherwise your just paying extra.

I do know a lot of people that take their pets to the clint moore vet in boca and love them too. They are pretty good priced too. Our vet is in Lake Worth off of 10 ave and congress, he has "banker" hours but he is cheap and very good. kinda a long drive from boca but we think he is worth it.

  • I have been pricing it out and it looks like using bbanfield through petsmart is going to be our best bet for the first year wellness plan. It's 390 for the year and included all his shots and neutering. No copays for any visits either.

I really really like Clint Moore, but when I called about prices they said it would 128 per set of shots x 5 because he needs a series of 5 sets for the shots and 400 for the neutering. Does that seem steep to anyone else?

  • Behapy,

I have Banfield and you have to be aware that it is not an insurance plan but instead a wellness plan. They only reduces fees on things like shots and teeth cleaning. Once you are in it you have to wait a year to get out of it even if the dog passes away.

Just this weekend I did some searching on this topic and found several great pet insurance plans. I know some people might think it is silly to get insurance but certain breeds are prone to getting sick. You don't know how many times I have had to take my pug in after hours to an emergency vet to get checked out. Most of the plans I found cover 80% of any type of pet related visit such as hospitalization, after hours visits, and regular checkups. I highly getting the insurance if you can because just one visit to an emergency vet can easlit run you 400.00...believe me I know! Surprise

Here is a site that I found that compares the different plans and gives you reviews: http://www.petinsurancereview.com/

We decided to go with Pets Best..I hope this helps you out!! Smile

  • You're right, I'm aware it's a wellness plan. Sorry for the confusion. I am getting him the wellness plan through them and then going to get a separate insurance policy for him for accident and illness. I am thinking for going with embrace as they have had the best reviews so far that I have found.

He is predisposed to heart issues because he is a cavalier so I know I want the policy.

ETA: That's the same website I have been on all morning. I will look into the carrier you mentioned!

    Thanks!

  • I did the Banfield plan for 2.5 years and I don't really think it's worth it after the first year.

I researched other vets at the time and the office visits, shots, neutering, etc. cost more if I went with them, so I went with Banfield.  The plan wasn't too expensive and I liked that I could drop her off really early before work or go on the weekends.  On the downside, a new vet saw her each time and there was no personal relationship.  I always had to wait a while to see the vet too and didn't really like the vet techs/nurses. Lots of them were teenagers and didn't know what they were doing and were also rude.

Since Sandy has so many allergy issues I have since switched to a really affordable vet and I love her.  She is the only one in the practice and has a personal relationship with us.  She is also really really affordable, probably the same I would ahve paid at Banfield.

My advice is to research lots of different vets and compare!  I would go with someone other than Banfield if the prices are close.

  • Just want to let you know that if you call humane society they will neuter your dog for a lesser price by a vet near your home,so thats an option. That way you domt have to spend 399 at banfield, and then just just pay for the vaccines.

    That's a good idea!
