why haven't my flowers come back yet?

I'm in the chicago area, and we have had 50's/30's lately. We did get snow last weekend, and each morning it has frosted.

I planted my first landscape plants & flowers last spring. They did great all the way until the snow came!  I planted 2 different hostas, day lillies and whatever the Home Depot breast cancer pink re-blooming plant was (anyone remember the name?) That was an annual.

I did nothing to them last fall. The leaves turned brown & wilted away. The stems are still there, too.  Should I have done something to each?

My neighbor has a thousand big hostas already coming up.  He split most of them last year and replanted. Those are even coming up.  Other neighbors have flowers coming up,too.

Why aren't mine? What should I have done in the fall? What can I do now? Should I just wait longer? Or dig them all up & start over?

Re: why haven't my flowers come back yet?

  • Hostas and day lillies are pretty tough to kill.  Believe me, I've tried.  ;-)  I'd just give them time.  Mine are just starting to come up and we've had pretty warm weather.
  • I am not that far north of you and the hostas on our property have not yet started to come up.  Our tulips' leaves are only about 6 inches out of the ground and no sign yet of any buds.

Like the PP said, give it time.

  • I'm 4 hours south of you and none of my hostas have started to grow yet.

I just noticed my daylilies were starting to poke up, but they typically don't bloom until June.

    There's plenty of time!

Honestly you're probably lucky that they haven't started to come up yet, because the weather last weekend would have been a very unpleasant shock to them. I live in Chicago and my hostas are no where to be seen yet, but I know they're coming. As the previous posters said, give them time!

  • I'm in Chicago and no sign of my hostas yet. They are usually the last to come up. My daylillies are barely starting to come out. The older ones are starting to come up, but I don't see any of the new ones I planted last year yet. No worries. As the other posters mentioned, it is too early.
