Irises?

How do I trim my irises?  I planted them last year and they grew like crazy but never bloomed.  I'm going to wait it out this year and see what they do.  Well a lot of the "leaves" died over the winter and I pulled them off but some are really bushy and bent over the ground.  How do I trim these? Can I cut healthy leaves? How do I cut them? Does anyone know how to get them to bloom?  As you can tell I'm a gardening idiot.

Re: Irises?

  • My irises didn't bloom until the second year I had them.  They need to be well established to bloom.  Unless you have dead foliage, I wouldn't trim the leaves now.  The best time to trim them is late fall when you can trim the foliage to 4-6".

  • Foliage! Thanks that a much better word than leaves, haha. ?So I can just cut them straight across or what?

  • I'm not a gardening expert, more of a learning newbie but I would say leave the foliage alone unless it is dead and brown. The leaves are what collects the sunlight etc for it to grow and mature. My leaves will droop on the ground (last years foliage) and I just let it go. As for blooming I had the same problem but this will be my 2nd year so I'm hoping for a bloom or two! GL!
