Topsy Turvy: when to start?

Since I finally have a house, I couldn't wait to have a Topsy Turvy so I ran out and bought one.  Now what do I do?  I know I have to go buy the tomato plant (I was thinking of doing large and small tomatoes- cherry or grape, etc)  Do both grow well in a topsy turvy?  And most importantly, when should I buy the tomato plant and when I should I hang it up?

Is there anything I should know about growing tomatoes like season length (I'm in Hudson Valley, NY) or fruit replenishment?  ie- when I pick one, does it grow back?  I'm just wondering how much I would yield in a season.

Thanks- I'm a newbie and this will be my start to my dream of having a green thumb!  (After all, I have managed to keep my house plants alive...)

Re: Topsy Turvy: when to start?

  • I was talking to my step-dad about my tomatoes yesterday and he said don't put them out until mid-April to make sure the last frost has come(I'm in central VA.) I did have a friend who did the Topsy-Turvy two years ago and she had great success with it. I don't know what kind of tomatoes she grew though. If I remember correctly 1 tomato plant should sustain 2 people throughout the growing season (usually June-Sept I believe.) You could always Google the success stories of gardeners who have used the Topsy-Turvy and see if they have any recommendations.
  • Even here in CA the nurseries have signs saying: "please resist the urge to plant tomatoes until April!". So it might be best to wait a little while.

Of course, I was too anxious so I ended up planting some seeds anyway :)
