Transplanting bushes/plants/trees put in by builders

My DH moved into our house before we met. He has been there about 7 years now. The builders put several shrubs in the front flower bed and he had no clue what they were. It looks like one is a crape myrtle and one is a rhododendron. I have no idea what the other two are. Anyway, it looks like they just stuck whatever plants they had in the flower bed. I want to transplant them to another area but I'm hate to kill them during the move.

How big do crape myrtles get? What about rhododendrons? When is the best time of the year to transplant? They are planted about 2 feet from the house and I'm worried that they are too close.

I'm in zone 7 if that matters. Thanks for any advice/tips!

Re: Transplanting bushes/plants/trees put in by builders

  • Spring and fall are the best times to transplant.  Crepe myrtles can get really big depending on what kind you have.  My neighbor has some that are probably 25' tall but there are some that are more like 15' at maturity.  Either way, 2' from your house is too close so I'd move them.  Rhododendrons don't get nearly as big, but you should move those as well if they're that close.

I prefer transplanting in spring because in fall I've had trouble getting plants established before winter and sometimes they don't make it come spring.  As I said, that's just personal preference though.  Some people say they have better luck in fall.  Either way, you can do it now.

  • Thank you :-) I'll try to get some pictures tonight to post. I can't believe the builder planted these the way he did. Seriously it's like he just has some leftover plants in his truck and planted them in random spots. They're very pretty plants - but, not in good place.
