Who's hosting Easter?

What are you planning on for a menu?

We are doing a ham, and I just got a recipe for corn chowder that sounds awesome. Trying to figure out what else to serve (other than bread, which was my husband's only suggestion haha).

(You'd think this was our first year hosting Easter. Nope, it's our 3rd Embarrassed)

Re: Who's hosting Easter?

  • We're going to T's aunt's house with his extended family (well, most of them).  Not sure what we're eating besides the cookies I was asked to bake!

  • Not I. My aunt is. She usually does a ham and something poultry, plus an array of in season veggies with mashed potatoes and sometimes stuffing too. And of course bread. Wink

  • We don't celebrate Easter... but I hate how Passover and Easter coincide-- the last few years they haven't, but for the most part they tend to overlap. It makes it hard to keep Passover and go to someone's house for Easter if invited!

How about a side of roasted veggies? I have no idea what is served for Easter... sorry! Good luck though!

Well as stated in the OP, I am serving a ham, so whatever you would serve with that Wink

Ok so I don't eat ham either! Isn't there some traditional dishes that people tend to serve?- I'm clueless. Scalloped potatoes?

  • back to answer your question about food...

(and love J's response about bread!)

Maybe a green bean casserole?  Or steamed asparagus wrapped with prosciutto? And....garlic mashed potatoes (or just regular mashed potatoes)

  • Not sure if the flavors would go with ham but Parmesan Roasted Broccoli or Orzo with Roasted Veggies are great side dishes.
  • The veggies that are usually served on holidays (Easter/Thanksgiving/Christmas) in my family are:

carrots, green beans, creamed onions, squash, turnip, peas, cauliflower/broccoli

  • We always had green eggs and ham for Easter.

  • I am working till 3. I think my family is going out to dinner... Well I am hoping we are haha.

  • Me!  Ham, mashed potatoes, butternut squash, peas, anise, asparagus, ravioli, meatballs, sausages, and italian stuffed peppers.  Ok so please don't read my menu and the next question and laugh, but does anyone know of a yummy low fat, sugar free dessert?  We will have italian pastries for dessert, but I can only do low fat sugar free...suggestions?
  • My younger sister is coming out for Easter over her spring break!  We might do Cornish Game Hens this year.  I'm not a big Ham person so with it being just the three of us, we'll do something different.

Sides might include.... twice baked potatoes, green bean casserole, quinoa salad, deviled eggs (ironic for Easter, no?).

Yams would be good with ham, and not just because it rhymes!  Or doing maple butter with the bread rolls if you're doing honey roasted ham.

I'm an atheist. This wasn't a post about religious traditional dishes, just looking for help on what to serve for a big family dinner, you know?

I couldn't help it, I laughed! hahaha And I have no ideas for you, sorry!

  • Oohh Buckeye I like the idea of doing twice baked potatoes instead of just mashed. I love me some mashed potatoes, but twice baked makes it a little more special since we have mashed all the time!

DH's family isn't religious but still tend to have "traditional" dishes for Christmas (they don't celebrate Easter).... I was more asking what is typically served to try to help with some suggestions as I am clueless for the most part about what might be options. Again, I don't really know what goes well with ham but I love the 2 dishes I posted above plus butternut squash salad

  • This is your third year hosting Easter!  Who comes over?  We are hosting my Dad for breakfast, but I think for dinner we are going to the IL's.  We usually have ham and Italian food.  With the ham we have stuffed artichokes, stuffed peppers, mashed potatoes, corn, and carrots and stuffed mushrooms.  I really never eat any of that because I much prefer the stuffed shells and gnocchi!  He he he.

Haha ya. The first year DH's side of the family did Easter on Saturday so that left us to just see my family on Sunday. It was our first holiday in our house, so we jumped on the chance. It was just us, my parents and brother.

Then last year we decided to do it again, even though DH's family was back on Sunday again. We just don't see most of them on Easter anymore, except his parents who came for dessert.

This year is a little different because Greek Easter is also the same day (usually they are on a different day) so my Aunt and Grandmother are coming too. Should be interesting! I am guessing the ILs will just come for dessert again.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will add them to the list of possibilities!!

  • We'll be at my parents house in the morning and then my IL's in the evening for dessert and what not. My mom and I have an Easter tradition of making pineapple crisp to go with the ham. It is so super yummy. I can try to find the recipe, but it's simple it just like an apple crisp but with pineapples. We also have fresh green beans and baked sweet potatoes mmm.

  • We're going with my family (same as every year), BUT this year we might host mother's day! No one but my parents and one cousin has seen our house yet, and I've never officially hosted a family event before, so I'm excited.

But Easter: not sure what we'll bring. Ham, salad, jello, hot cross buns, deviled eggs, cake and candy are all spoken for. We might bring some sort of cheese appetizer (my usual contribution) and some wine.?
