Have you looked into bell training for the potty training?

ETA: Oh, and are you crate training?

  • yepp we're crate training... he actually does really well with it, its just in the evening when he's out of the crate that he has to pee super often, and only occasionally gives us cues.

I've heard about bell training and have been meaning to look into it... Thanks for reminding me, I'll read up on that today!!!

  • When we first got Rufus, I took him out about every hour whether he gave me a cue or not. He only had about 1 accident a day for the first week, and then none after that.  Take him out, give him the potty command, and wait/walk around for 5-10 minutes. If he doesn't go, they say to take him back inside, crate for 15 minutes, and then try again.

Our trainer said that the top priority times to take him out would be after eating, after napping and after playing. All those activities stimulate the need to potty.

We totally need to do the bell. Rufus's current method of walking to the door and looking at us only works if we're looking at him! lol And I'm not fond of his backup plan to come and herd me to the door when he has to go!

  • Ditto the "after playing" notion. It took us a while to realize just how urgent this one was. We finally got the hang of it though. The moment playing stops, outside we go.

Leigha - we have the same problem with Chaz not being able to communicate when he has to go! It's not an issue at our house (because the back door is always open if we're home and awake), but he's had an accident or two at other people's houses because he thinks he's telling us that he needs to go out, but we didn't get the message.

  • yeah i think maybe we just have to be more consistent with taking him out. we try to do it about every 1-1.5 hours when he's out of the crate. But I don't always think to take him out right after playing... maybe thats part of the issue...
