Reccomend your closet org system

Hi Ladies,

My closet collapsed this morning! I convinced my DH that we need to invest in a good closet organization system since this isn't the first time this happens. We still have the poles the builder installed which are not very good quality.  Can anyone reccomend a good brand?

I've heard they do this at the container store but it is so pricey. I saw online that walmart has a rubbermaid line. Anyone have any experience with the walmart ones?

  • All our closets are Elfa (Container Store brand) and honestly, they are amazing!  If you can wait a bit for their 30% off sale, it is well worth it.  The sale is normally Jan/Feb, but last yr I recall they had one in the summer.  Try calling them to find out.

We priced it out and then compared it to the ones sold in Lowes, and it was the same thing and better quality.  I love that you can move the shelves around to meet your current needs.

  • Thanks Jackie!

I have been eyeing that Elfa system all day which is why I came over her asking for recs. Not sure if it was worth it or not. To be honest, I really really want to invest in one like that because im so tired of the closet falling. Im going to price it out....let see.

     ps. :-))))

So I'm going to sit back and watch the responses too.. :D

Eli - I am cracking up as I type because of your response. That is hilarious. I go by the same method as you. My poor closet is ready to burst any second now.

  • This is by no means a system, but one thing I found in Real Simple magazine that has been a big help in my closet for my purses is shower curtain rings. I had them stacked everywhere and having them at eye level helps me pick one much faster.

Lol! That worked for me for about a year. This is the 3rd time the closet comes down and there are so many holes in the walls from re-installing the brackets that I convinced the hubby to let me get some quotes on a nice closet system! Needless to say, im so happy that closet came down today! lol

  • Where we rent we have the "California Style" closet and I love it. There are lots of drawers and cubbies to put everything away. We have a small closet and this adds lots of room. I actually like folding everything that won't wrinkle rather than hanging it.

I also saw an informercial for the hangers below and I actually think it's a good idea! I may get them if I see them in the store.

I wish I had a place to hang mine, because this is an awesome idea!  We have cubbies for purses in my closet.

  • I wish I could say the rest of the closet is as organized as my purses, but right now it's a mess because I had to add maternity clothes and it was a tight fit already. I did get a bunch of slim hangers at Costco, and that's made a huge difference. I got rid of all my old plastic ones and now they're all on the same ones. They saved a ton of room!

Good to know! I need something!

  • Michi - the hangers are great. They're covered in felt or something similar, and they hold things really well. They're about $15 for a big box. I highly suggest them. Plus it looks so much nicer to not have different color plastic ones.

My MIL just bought these!  They look great... but we just bought 2 boxes of the wooden hangers also from Costco!  I lvoe them b/c it holds a lot of the heavy clothes (DH's pants in particular) and don't bend like some of the plastic ones.

  • Hi Jenny!

I had the same thing happen to me last year. Our whole shelving system fell down. It was quite a task to put everything back up.

Just a couple of questions to help narrow down options.

    What is your price range?

    Do you want something permanent?

Are either you or your H handy?

Ikea has some storage systems that were almost identical to the Container Store, but cheaper. The problem I saw was that you have to track down an employee to help you put your closet together (make sure you buy all the right pieces) which is hard to find them sometimes.

    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/bedroom/11466/

Here are some from the Home Depot that is very similar to the Container Store, but much cheaper:

Closet Maid are very good from them and not too hard to install.

Also Target has a few that are from closet maid as well and more temporary ones:

      http://www.target.com/s/190-2385664-4081003?_encoding=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&keywords=closet%20organizer&searchSize=30&ref=sr_bx_1_1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=1038576&searchPage=1

The best thing I've found is putting up several supports against the wall and make sure you drill into the studs and not drywall. Also, it's best to do two shelves or rods. One on top and one half way down. Hang shirts on top and pants/skirts on the bottom. This way the weight is distributed more evenly.

Also, I was told that if you're a teacher or anyone you know is one, then the Container Store gives you a discount. So even if you don't want to buy the expensive pieces, you can buy the cheaper accessories.

    HTH's GL!

  • Also, the metal shelving unit is almost always cheaper than the wood and easier to install.
  • Thank you sooo much Shay! Im going to look at ALL of these.

I went to the container store today. I loved the way they set it all up for me and printed everything out.....but the price I didnt love. They quoted me about $700. Thats a bit much for me and that was the most basic (no wood just metal). I cant justify that because our closet is just not that big. It is a walk-in but a small one. My DH and I are not that handy lol. What I loved about the container store is that they cut everything for you, give you all the screws etc.

The salesperson at the store actually told me to go look at the Home Depot ones to compare. She says they are the most similar to the ones I looked at today.  She did say we would have to cut pieces ourselves and basically look for the screws and mounting equipment ourselves.

Lets see. I am going to drag the hubby to ikea and home depot this weekend and just take a look at all of the above.

Oh- and thank you for the heads up about the teacher discount!
