Vent from the T

No problem with the service this morning, but I'm sure we have all had issues with certain passengers.

This morning it was a woman with a huge wet 'puffy' coat that basically sat on half of my lap with her arm, soaking my leg with the coat and her dripping umbrella.  During the ride she also hits me twice in the face with said wet arm, while flipping her paper.

Granted, I will admit that I fell asleep.  Perhaps I was leaning in her direction, but I woke up quite frequently and that did not seem to be the case.  Plus, it would have been pretty darn hard for me to be moving anywhere with her wedged on top of me.  Even if I was, a simple nudge or an "excuse me" would have been fine, and I would have apologized.  I don't think that she even noticed that she hit me, b/c she certainly didn't acknowledge it.   I hope that she at least noticed that I had to dig my way out from under her when I left.

Grrr... such a minor thing, but a lousy way to start the day.  Thanks for letting me vent.  Please feel free to dump your own commuting vents in here!

Re: Vent from the T

  • I take the Red line everyday, I hear ya girl. Most of the people I seem to ride with are okay, but there are certainly some assholes (thanks jCam for pointing out the other month that I can indeed say ass without $ signs Smile).

For example, yesterday we were pulling into Alewife and two lines had formed by the door. I was second on one side and after the door open the guy who was third in the other line tried to push me (and probably the woman in front of him) out of the way so he could get out first. I stood my ground and didn't let him, but it's like, hello common decency!

There another guy I cannot stand so much that I know notice him on the train. Luckily I hardly ever see him anymore. He has no sense of personal space because he wants to be first off the train. One time I happened to be standing at the door we would be exiting out of and he was so close behind me I could feel his belt bucket ON MY BARE BACK (it was summer and I was wearing a halter; I'm 5'1 and he's like a giant). GROSS!

  • Ugh, that is a crappy way to start the day.  Rain related, I hate it when people put their wet umbrellas on the seat next to them.  Not only are they being obnoxious and taking up two seats, but they are getting the second seat wet!
  • Yep, I'm on the red line too.  I think that people get so antsy about the long trip that they get so anxious to leave.

That is really disgusting about the guy pressed against you.  I get so grossed out by the lack of basic respect for personal space.  Yes, it can get crowded, and I understand that, but many times people take it to an unnecessary level.  There have been many times when I happened to sit at the end of a row, and someone by the door decides to sit on the bar next to my shoulder -- seriously, how do you think that putting your butt on someone's shoulder is ok?!

  • Ugh that's so obnoxious. I take the commuter rail and green line every day and it's usually terrible. Obnoxious people on the commuter rail during rush hour that put their crap on the seat next to them and then go to sleep so if you don't want to stand up for the 25 min ride you have to wake them up and ask them to move their stuff. And then sit next to this person who is pissed that you woke them up. And the green line is terrible because there are so many trains on one line and you can be stuck between stations for a long time. And of course there are the people who, instead of holding onto the pole with their hand will lean on it so everyone holding on now has their hand buried in someone's back fat. eww. I take the silver line twice a week too and that's always an adventure. In NY I had to stand next to this really sweaty man one time and sweat actually dripped off his head and onto the top of my foot because I was wearing  sandals. SO disgusting.

That happens to me sometimes too. I want to elbow them in the butt, lol.

Ugh I hate that too. I'm small and need to grab onto a poll, so I just put my hand practically in their face and most people get the picture and stop leaning the hold the poll instead.

Exactly!  Somehow being small seems to imply to some people that you don't really need any space.

I don't sit on the end for this very reason.

The green line is by far the worst of all of them.  There is a stop a block from my office and I choose to walk a mile to the orange line instead because I just can't handle it any more.  Too many obnoxious kids, mostly, but also the unpredictable delays, constant stops and starts, ugh.

  • Last week was a bad T commuting week for me.  Because of all the rain it flooded the tracks so for the ENTIRE week part of the Green Line was shut down.  I would get on, get off three stops too soon, take a bus (they had them shuttling people back and forth), and then would walk from there because my stop was in the closed section, it was unnerving to say the least!

I don't usually have problems with other passengers, I'm lucky enough to get on early and get off the T before we're really far inbound so its never too terribly crowded.  And the earliest I typically have to head in to work or school is 9:30-10:30, so its not really overcrowded.

Agreed.  I saved about 15 minutes on my commute by switching from the green line to the orange line.  For me, it's a longer walk too, but not by as much.

Mrs C poor you!  This sounds awful!

  • I hated that when I rode the T. My only saving grace was that I used to get on in Briantree and since its the firt stop then I always got a great seat next to a wall or something so I only had one neighbor.
