3/26 - family/parents

Do visits from your family bring out the best or worst in you?

I can say for sure that visits with our parents bring out the worst in both myself and DH.

I'm about to batton down the hatches.  My parents arrive here at 5:00pm today!

And don't get me wrong, we love our family and we love having them come visit.  We're just both extra stressed out/tense/snippy when they're around... I think because of the extra pressure or something... We had friends stay with us the weekend before last and we were perfectly fine!

Re: 3/26 - family/parents

  • The worst. I am totally the same way as you. Dh likes it when they visit though.

My FIL just drives me insane and I can't be around him for more than 2 hours at a time.

My mom, God love her, is just very critical and complains a lot. And she has the tendency to get very, very wound up which is not a good mix with very mellow Dh, me, and my dad.

My MIL and my own father do not drive me crazy although sometimes my MIL rambles and my father will make an off color remark that rubs me the wrong way, but for the most part, I truly enjoy their company!

  • Depends...

When it's just our parents, no sibling, we are generally about the same. We are a little more tense, but nothing too noticable.

When it's our parents and siblings, it's much worse! Actually, DH and I usually lean on one another for support at the end of each day with them. But there are arguements and bickering all throughout the day between us and family members. We love our familes and get along with our in-laws, but having them stay with us drives us BSC. This 4th of July we are having both our familes including siblings stay with us. I am prepared for a minor nervous breakdown.

  • Well my Mom lives here in SC and my Dad visits maybe 2x a year.  I love when he visits, because he doesn't do it often and I really look forward to his visits.

Both of DH's parents are deceased, so obviously we'll have no MIL/FIL visits.  The only other immediate family that we would possibly have visit would be DH brother- but chance of that happening would be .000000001%.

If my BIL came to visit that would bring out the worst in me.

  • I love when our parents are around!  We are lucky in that area.  I do give the house a thorough cleaning before they arrive, but I never feel pressure around either set.
