Baby name...poll

We have our favorites, but won't narrow the lists down until we meet the baby.  Most of them are family names from both sides of the family.  The list of boy names we can't use is huge b/c all of the grandkids already in DH's family are boys!

We're still Team Green...so we're working on both boy and girl names.  I wanted to keep the name selections a secret...but after DH's family poked and prodded and wouldn't let it go - DH made me tell them.  Ugh.  I didn't want opinions for this exact reason.

One of our girl names is Joanie or Joan.  My mom and my middle names are Joan (and it is a girly play on John - my dad's name).

Girl:

Joanie Adele or Adele Joan

Boy:

some combo of Casimir (nick names would be Casey, Caz, or CJ if used with John as a middle name), Samuel (Sam), Owen, Edward...

When I say Joanie - does a certain sitcom reference pop in your head?  It doesn't for me - but DH and his siblings/friends age group (late 30s - 50s) immediately make a joke about that sitcom.

I think people in their 20s now and their kids wouldn't know the reference and therefore wouldn't immediately make those jokes...DH is willing to use the name - but he does giggle about it alot.

Re: Baby name...poll

  • I like Joanie....and I still have no idea what sitcom your talking about, so I think your good.

    Boy: I like Owen

  • Joanie is adorable! I like Adele too, but not a fan of Adele Joan.

I think there's going to be an Edward explosion with twilight, so I'd only use that as a middle. Love Owen, but Casimir is a pretty sweet & unique name!

  • I like both Joan and Joanie and, like Sierra, I have no idea what sitcom they are referencing.

How exactly do you pronounce Casimir?  I am definitely a fan of unique but not crazy unique (like Blue Angel or Sage Moonbell).

  • Love the name Owen.

I like Joanie Adele. I know the sitcom you're referencing and it is in no way the first thing I think of. I think by the time she's ten, it's going to be even more obscure.

    My thoughts exactly!

Oh..eew...I'm not into Twilight - so i didn't even think of that.  Good Point!

  • No one under the age of 40 right now is going to ask her about Chachie.

Now I think of Joan from Mad Men.  She is my favorite!

Casimir is an old school Lithuanian and Polish name...think Casimir Pulaski day???  Maybe it is a Chicago Catholic thing.  It is more old-school traditional than unique I guess.  (my grandpa's name)

The boy's name Casimir c(a)-si-. mir is pronounced KAH-zee-meer...but in my family it comes out even more casual like kaz-mir...the middle "i" gets slurred in there.

  • I'm also bummed that Twilight will probably make Edward very popular.

    This.

I love Owen.  I can't like anything that ends up as CJ because that was my stepdads name.  I do like the first name though.

Same here.  I prefer Joanie Adele over Adele Joan because it flows better IMO.  I wouldn't worry about the sitcom reference AT ALL!  I've never heard Casimir before (I'm Lithuanian as well), but I think it would be unique.  I think it's nice to incorporate family history or meaningful things with names.

I guess I should have said uncommon rather than unique but either way I like it. I like when names have a history and aren't just picked because they are popular.

  • I like the flow of Adele Joan- you could still call her Joanie if you wanted to.

Love, love, love Owen.  Might even add it to my boy name list (we are making separate lists and then comparing)

Our last name is Clark - so I think either order with Joan/Joanie/Adele would work...there's also Adele Evelyn that I like too...

    this is so HARD!

Owen is a wildcard for us...not a family name but it totally works with Clark.

I have to look at how popular Owen is getting...I'd hate for my kid to be in the same "Jennifer" situation I was...4 in my class of 30...a little much.

  • My personal taste = Adele Evelyn, Owen Edward, or Owen Casmir. I like I really like Owen, and I think Adele sounds great with your last name. Joanie is cute too, however :).

I'm partial to Edward because it's my DH's name, but he goes by Ned. I don't like Ed as a nickname, but I like Ned and Ted, or just straight up Edward.

I think Casmir (can't remember if I'm spelling that correctly) is a cool name, but I'm not very big on name alliterations and Caz Clark doesn't do it for me (no offense to anyone who is in to the alliterations!).

  • Joanie is a cute name and though I DO think of the sitcom name I don't think it will be that big of a deal.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Samuel and Owen. . .two of my favorites.

  • I love the name Adele and that was on my list before DH vetoed it.  It would have been cut anyway since my cousin named her girlie Adalaide and it is just to close for comfort.

As for boys i would go with either Owen or Samuel. Edward is just going to get to bid...plus I am team Jacob.

  • Eh, I'm under 40 and I still know what sitcom you're referring to.  I don't think that would be a huge deal.  I am biased against Joanie, it was DH's ex's name.  I think Joan something would be ok, and you could call her Joanie, but think about how a 40 year old running for president would come across with the name Joanie - it's juvenile.  IMO, you want names that you can shorten/nickname to cutesy when they're little, but that they can grow into.

I think Casimir is unique, you're not going to run into 4 kids in one class names Casimir.

Maybe you can think about ways to incorporate family names into something new and unique?  My ex-SIL named her twins after my ex-inlaws, MIL was Lee Ellen, and she named her Rylee Ellen, and FIL's middle name was Glen, they named him Ryker Glen.

    YMMV.
