Damn...the ants found my raised beds already

Ok...the ants have already found one of my rasied beds in the back. I don't have anything planted in it yet, but plant to start planting next weekend or the following week. They're small brown/black ants. Apparently, they love the nice cozy home I made for them. How do I get rid of them in a safe and eco-friendly manner?

Re: Damn...the ants found my raised beds already

  • My foot is pretty eco-friendly. Stick out tongue I kid, I kid.
  • I got them in my beds and I just left them - I figured they'd help eat some of the pests I didn't want, fertlize the plants better, and help keep the soil aerated.  Although, the type i had weren't eating my plants...not sure about yours...

  • We have them a little in our beds and we just leave them.  They don't eat our plants, I don't know if you have the same kind though.  We have sugar ants. I've read that getting ants in your compost pile means the pile is too dry, not sure if it's the same for raised beds.  If you haven't planted anything yet, I would try really wetting the soil and see if you can drive them out that way.
