Does anyone know what motivated this new rule when it comes to overtime at a football game.
New rule is that a team has to make a TD to win. If the teams only make FG then the old rules apply.

Re: OT Rules for NFL
I'm not quite sure. I think it really picked up after the Vikings-Saints playoff game [i think that's the game...when the saints won on a field goal and the vikings didn't even touch the ball]...and I know the rules had kinda come under fire during the postseason...
I'm glad they changed it...we'll see how this goes though. I guess they're going to meet again and talk about putting it into effect for the regular season? Hm.
It mostly came about because the team that won the coin toss in OT pretty much guaranteed a win. All they had to do was get the ball in somewhat decent field goal range and they win. With kickers' legs getting stronger it is easier for them to hit the farther FGs.
And actually that isn't how the rule is. If the first team to get the ball only gets a FG, the 2nd team has a chance to get a TD or tie the game. If team 1 scores a TD game is over. If after each team has possessed the ball a field goal is scored, the game will end.
Edit- This rule would only come into play in the postseason. Here's a link

I completely agree.
It is a really, really, really, really, really lame compromise. Should be a full 15 min, an extra 'quarter', or heck, even just ten minutes. Or, one full possession each. This new rule is shiit.
And it should apply to the regular season as well.
I agree. This rule is lame.
I agree... A full quarter of OT would have been better (for regular season too, but I heard they will be discussing regular season OT closer to the preseason) but they had to do something. I hate when a game ends in OT over a field goal... It's too easy.
