soil testing reports

I read the rec. below to use the extension service for soil testing. I found our state's testing service, and they have a sample report. It tells you what kind of ferticlizer to use. My question is, are there organic fertilizers I could use (besides compost)? I guess I don't want to pay for the service if it is only going to tell me which non-organic fertilizers to use.

Here is the sample report, if that helps.

ETA: I guesss the link doesn't go directly to the sample. Under Lawn and garden, click sample report.

The report tells you how much NPK ratio you need for optiumum plant growth. (NPK is just shorthand for nitrogen, phosphorus,, potassium.) The report doesn't tell you what specific fertilizer to apply, it just tells you what amounts if the differnt nutrients you need.

Fertilizers are sold by NPK ratio. You can buy organic fertilizers or non-organic fertilizers with specific NPK ratios. (Even vertified organic farmers use fertilizers.)

Compost is not fertilizer. Compost is a type of soil amendment.  Compost can be used instead of fertilizer, but you won't find any compost with a NPK ratio and you run the risk of getting your nutrients out of balance.

  • There are several brands of organic fertilizers on the market; a good garden shop will stock them.  I don't think the big box stores do, but I could be wrong.

  • The big box stores actually do have organic fertilizers now.  Since there's such a demand for it now, it's in their best interest to carry it.
