dumb notebook/netbook question

I'm a fairly new netbook owner and have never used a laptop. Is there a difference if you just close the cover or actually put it in standby mode? I usually just close the cover when I'm done. I;ve already crashed the maching and wonder if that could be a cause. Thanks!

It depends on your energy settings.  I'm not sure what kind of computer you have, but you can usually check out your settings by clicking on your battery icon in the tray in the bottom right of your screen.  There should be an option to change your energy/power settings, and you can choose exactly what you want to happen when you shut the lid somewhere in there.  If you can't find that menu, it should also be in your control panel somewhere.

I know that was vague, but I hope it helped!  It really depends on your operating system, I guess.  Currently, my computer goes to sleep when I close the lid.

I'm not an expert at computing, but shutting your lid should not crash your computer; I suspect there is another issue somewhere.

I have an Acer and a Toshiba netbooks and when i use Standby I turn it on the same as if I was starting from Turn off mode. The point of stand by is so that you do not have to wait as long when you push the power button. But I always wait for my screen to go black before i close. I can make sure it is complete.

I have a Gateway, and if I don't put it into Hibernate or Shut Down before I close it, I have to reboot it.
