Starting seeds - ?

I am starting my seeds (some flowers, some veggies),  instead of rigging up lights can I just put the trays out during the day and bring them in at night? Or should I just go buy a light?

If I can't just put them out/bring them in, why not? This is my first time sowing from seed. TIA!

Re: Starting seeds - ?

  • Is the weather warm enough for them outside where you live? This is my first year with seeds and we have a light inside and it is soooo simple.

Moisture and soil temperature affect seed germination. Most seeds need soil temps above the 50s to germinate.  But many summer plants (like tomatoes and peppers) need soil temps in the 60s and 70s.  So putting your seeds outside may not give you warm enough soil temps.

As for putting seedlings outside, most places aren't warm enough for seedlings to be outside during the day.  The ambient air temps are too low for the seedlings to survive.

Seedlings need pretty direct light and do best with 12-16 hours a day.  That's why most people use a light kit.
