Tell me about Charlottesville...
Hi ladies,
DH & I are coming down there tomorrow for a job interview. Tomorrow night we are having dinner with the potential employer & Monday I will have the day to explore on my own/check out the area.
Any recommendations? I want to see the highlights of the town, but also the everyday things (nice communities to live in/grocery stores, etc.).
We also still need to book a hotel & we're not sure if there is a preferred area.
We are really looking forward to visiting the area since everyone we have spoken to says how beautiful it is!
Thanks in advance.
Re: Tell me about Charlottesville...
I live in Charlottesville, but am new to the area. We moved here from Atlanta last summer.
For a hotel, I recommend bidding for a hotel on Priceline. I did this both times we came to visit for interviews and such and got great hotels ( I bid 3* and got the Courtyard Marriott and Doubletree on 29 North) at a great price. If you don't want to do that -- any hotel should be fine as Charlottesville is not too big.
I'm not an expert on the nice communities or preferred places to live -- there are many nice areas, depending on what you want. There are older parts of town with more historic homes and new neighborhoods as well. Are you looking to buy or rent? house or apartment?
As for things to do, the town has a very nice pedestrian mall downtown, called the Downtown Mall. Its a nice place to walk around and go out to eat. If you're interested in wine, you can do wine tasting at many local vineyards (I think it's a really fun activity). You could always go up to Monticello (its about $20 each to tour) or go walk around the UVa grounds.
Let me know if I can answer any other questions.
Cville is very beautiful and like all places, has its ups and downs.
The highlights to me are: UVA, wine, food, and nature
One thing you will catch on to very quickly is it is a college town...home to UVA. UVA is the largest employer in the area and a lot of things revolve around the school. You will know when the college kids are in school and when they are out of for the summer. The campus at UVA is called "The Grounds" and they are absolutely gorgous especially in the spring. Right arcross from the Rotunda, which is UVA's singature building, is called "The Corner" and its a line of college bars, restraunts, and shops. Bodos Bagels is a local bagel shop that always has a line out of the door....amazing! Lots of awesome food around town.
Along with UVA, the history and influence of Thomas Jefferson is very strong and his house at Monticello which is a short drive outside of the city. Wine is of course popular with tons of wineries in the area. Outdoor activities such as hiking are also very popular with lots of good trails. During the winter, Wintergreen Ski Resort is a short drive away.
As previously mentioned, the downtown mall is another area of shops and restraunts with a farily eclectice atmosphere. In the summer, they do an outdoor beer fest/ concert series on Fridays.
On the downside, Charlottesville is pretty expensive to live in. A lot of people live outside the city by about 20 minutes or so. Forest Lakes to the north and Lake Monticello to the south are popular areas. Crozet to the west is becoming popular as well. Then you have areas like Keswick which are very nice.
You'll be an hour away from the west end of Richmond which will give you more shopping options (Cville has basic shopping and nice boutique shops in my opinion).
Grocery stores are your typical chains for the most part...my favorite is Harris Teeter in Barracks Road. There's aslo a Whole Foods. Greenberry's is a local coffee chain that locals love.
