we almost don't need a garbage can anymore

A few months ago we ordred the smallest garbage can we could get for our city. We recycle almost everything and have just started composting (we just got a new bin). We can put our compost in our yard waste bin and the city picks it up. We barely have any garbage to put in our tiny can. I am almost considering sharing a can wtih the neigbors (also our landlords) and asking if we could just give them some extra money for rent. Probably won't happen though ;)

Re: we almost don't need a garbage can anymore

  • Sounds like us. :) Since we started composting and buying in bulk, we're amazed at how little trash we have! We're thinking of discontinuing our service and just bringing it to the dump whenever we need to.

  • We've only been putting ours out now every other week, sometimes even 3 weeks will go before it's full. This week when garbage day came there was nothing in our can.

  • Me too! I love it. Ours only gets picked up every other week. It would be silly to pick mine up weekly!

  • We go through maybe a WalMart sized bag of trash every two weeks in a house of 5. It's a great thing indeed.

And most of our trash is envelopes (as the glue in them makes our local paper recycling plant get stuck... its different everywhere).  Our compost goes to making biogas to run the city buses on.

    Very cool!

I may be the crazy recycler here, but I would tear the top flap off, toss it, and recycle the rest.  I do that all the time for the plastic window in pasta boxes and the pour spout in things like olive oil.

I feel my efforts to reduce packaging waste, recycling, and composting should have reduced our trash more.  We do a tall kitchen-sized bag every 2 days or so, and 4-5 bags of those fill up our trash can which gets put on the curb every week or so.  Any recommendations on how to get it down more?

  • Our city requires us to pay for trash and recycling, and we can't opt out of the trash, so we have the smallest one.  I think DH puts it out most weeks, if he is putting out the recycling or yard waste bin, but it is rarely even half full.  They don't accept compost though.  The yard waste gets turned into mulch and is sold.
