Anyone have ODS health insurance?
We have to pick a new health insurance plan very soon. Is there anyone who has ODS and can give me some feedback about how they are to work with? I have to choose between ODS and Kaiser and while it's hard to get an appointment at Kaiser and the doctors are so-so, it's very cost effective for prescriptions, labs, etc. I would especially love to hear from anyone who is double covered by ODS (I will be covered by my own work plan, and then double covered by DH's, which will also be ODS).
Re: Anyone have ODS health insurance?
Here's how I view things from a user of both.
I've been with Kaiser for as long as I can remember. I'm a Kaiser kid my dad was in the medical field of Kaiser and I have my reservations. Kaiser is great for those concerned with cost effective measures. Have back pain? I did and they threw pain pills at me for nearly 6 months. After asking for three months (after 2 months of being on pain pills), I FINALLY got areferral to a PT. I've had similar experiences with Urology & dermatology referrals. It's really frustrating to know that you're going to waste your time and money to go to your PCP and know before you even get there you know you're going to get a referral to a specialist. If your primary concern is being cost effective and like the option of having labs, pharmacy & your PCP under one roof, shoot for Kaiser. If you are really interested in getting a relationship with a PCP etc and like having the option of self referral of a specialist if needed, then I'd go with ODS. Also ODS Dental- Premier network contracts with about 93% or so of the dentists in the state of Oregon- so chances are your dentist is already in the ODS network.
Hope that helps
We have ODS and I like it as well as I liked my BlueCross.
I've heard far too many negative things about Kaiser (including one from my dad about a patient who came into the Corvallis ER with severe appendicitis. Despite multiple physician opinions that she should be cared for immediately, Keizer insisted she be taken to Salem / nearest Keizer facility in order to cover her surgery. All of the doctors, including my dad felt so strongly that she needed immediate care that they offered to do the surgery for free. She ended up going to Salem because even without the physician costs, the hospital costs were more than they could afford (she was sick enough that she required a 1-2 week stay at least) and the doctors told the girl's husband that if anything happened because of Keizer's denial they would testify in a lawsuit.
I'm sure the physicians there are terrific but I never want to be in a situation where I'm locked into certain hospitals in order to be covered. Over the 4th we were on Orcas Island and had to take my daughter to the ER. We were able to get to Bellingham in minutes but I can't imagine if we'd gotten there and they'd told us, "Sorry Keizer says you have to go to Seattle or they won't cover you."
Sorry for the delayed response -- the Nest kept eating my posts.
Thanks for all the useful info, and yes it is for OEBB. DH and I decided to go with ODS for everything and we got OEBB to put in writing how our double coverage works. Yay!
