Deer ate my tulips!

So last fall I planted 40 tulip bulbs in my front flowerbed.  They were coming up nicely, but today I noticed deer prints in the dirt and over half of the tulips were eaten!  Short of making venison for dinner (just kidding!), what can I do to prevent the deer from eating the rest?  And will the ones that were eaten grow back, or is that it for this season?

Re: Deer ate my tulips!

  • My aunt always rigs up a big chicken wire dealie over her bulbs.  Apparently the deer love the greens but not the flower.  So once they start to flower she takes the chicken wire down.  As for blooming...you might get lucky.  Rabbits are my nemisis here and I have yet to have a crocus in bloom because of those little jerks.  I'll trade you venison for rabbit stew?

my dad puts stakes that are about two feet high at the corners of his bed (sometimes half way, too, depending on how long the bed is), strings wire at the top and half way down, and then wipes it with used crank case oil.  there are tons of deer where they live (pittsburgh) and it's the only thing that has worked... the deer just won't come near it.  depending on how long the tulips are blooming he'll re-apply the oil after a few weeks.
