To All Orlando Nesties

To All Orlando Nesties

-->

I am planning a move to the Orlando area in a few months and hubby and I are looking for a safe, nice, not-too boring area to relocate to. We have two little girls, so we want something that is ideal for a family (good schools, etc.)

We are leaning towards the Lake Mary or Winter Park area, but we're open to suggestions. We are looking for a nice apartment complex, but can't tell which ones are good and which aren't as good as they look.

Any information you can give me would be wonderful and much
appreciated!

Thank you in advance!!!

Re: To All Orlando Nesties

  • Lake Mary is nice very new construction but sort of remote...30 min from Orlando depending on traffic.

Winter Park is very quaint and pricey. Beautiful trees and parks. Expect Lily Pulitzer sweater sets and older money. Probably some of the best schools.

I live in Baldwin Park. It's new urban development project near Winter Park and downtown Orlando. We like it a lot. very kid-friendly and we get to know most of the neighbors quickly (which I love!) find rentals on Craigslist and there is a property management company, Post Properties. Good Luck!

  • Make sure you live close to where you work unless you want a potentially long commute.
  • I live in Avalon Park which is near Waterford Lakes area of Orlando and we LOOOOVE it. We don't have to drive more than 5-10 miles on the weekends to do anything.

Are you relocating for work? Do either of you have jobs here already?

I would look into a short term rental until you find jobs if you don't have them and that way you can guage how bad your derive will be.

I live in Avalon Park Orlando and worked in Lake Mary, it easily took me 45 minutes sometimes 1 hour and 15 mintues to get ONE WAY to/from work. Drive times in Central Florida are horrible if you aren't located right.

    HTH GL!

  • Lake Nona/ Moss Park is a nice area. They have A schools and have a brand new middle, high school and one elem. school is not even 3 years old and the other elem. school has a YMCA attached to it!

I should add there are only two apartment complexes out here but tons of places for rent as well. (condos, townhomes) I don't know much about the apt. complexes but they are nice from the outside!

  • I am a SAHM, and hubby is going to be working at Full Sail, so we need to be in the Winter Park area. Everytime I find something nice, we find out it's in a bad area, too far from where Full Sail is located, etc.
  • I second Baldwin Park!
  • Full Sail is in Winter Park, but it's barely on the outskirts. It's really closer to the UCF/Waterford Lakes area. I would look there. The only thing to worry about is that there's lots of college kids.

Other areas near by that i'd sugest are-

Oviedo (nearby, great schools, and very family friendly)

    Casselberry-

    Winter Springs

Avalon Park is nice, and not too far from Full sail either!

  • Hi there! I lived in Winter Park for several years. I think it's a great place to live--very centrally located and lots to do, plus you're smart for trying to live near your DH's job, since traffic here is challenging.

I would caution you to be very careful when selecting an apartment, especially in the area near Full Sail. Through the years, my mom and I have both lived in several of the complexes in that area and some are just fine, others are really rough. If you PM me the names of the complexes you're looking at, I can probably tell you what I know.

Also, I highly recommend looking into renting a privately-owned home or condo in the area. After about a decade of apartment living, my mom switched to renting a nice little single-family home in Winter Park, and it has been a great decision. The cost was only a little bit more and she's in a very nice quiet neighborhood.

Also, if you plan to stay in one place for a while, be sure to double-check that wherever you move is within the Winter Park school district. I think there are some homes with a Winter Park postal address, that don't quite make it into the school district. WP schools are among the best in Orange County, so that would definitely be great for your LO.

Good luck with your transition to Central Florida. I think you'll like Winter Park.

  • Oh, and I also agree with the pps who recommended Baldwin Park. It's literally right next to Winter Park, and it's a very beautiful community. Another great option to consider.
  • You would be very happy in Baldwin Park.  5 mins from Full Sail, Winter Park.  10 mins from the highway.  Great family oriented community.  The area around Full Sail can be a little iffy - - bad neighborhoods amongst ok neighborhoods, you definitely need to be careful.  But Baldwin Park is fabulous!
