Ladies-
As DH and I are now not working in an office, my normal Christmas charity stuff is a bit more harder to find. DH and I really try every year to find one of those "giving trees," you know, where you buy a toy for a local child in need.
I was reminded of that this morning while perusing Craigslist (someone was selling a toy that we had bought a few years back). Especially now that we are parents, the idea of a parent not being able to afford toys over the holidays breaks our heart, as does the idea of a child wanting an inexpensive (yet unreachable) toy. For example, a few years back, we got a 3 year old boy who just wanted a Weeble play set that was $20. (could you just cry?)
Can any of you please let me know if you know of any Nashua local ones that we could find? I understand that it's off season now, but please keep it in mind later on when these start to pop up- we appreciate it!
Re: Random, but...christmas charity?
The Hannaford's that I go to in Manchester has had a Christmans giving tree for the last couple of years. Maybe there is one in Nashua??
I let Ari choose the child and we choose gifts for them together.
I'm almost positive that The Salvation Army has a giving tree. They also do something with the Nashua Telegraph. I bealive it's called the Santa Fund. I know people donate money and gifts to this. They start to run articles about it around Thanksgiving.
St. Joe's hospital used to do a giving tree, but I don't know if they do it anymore. They did it when I was a teen, I volunteered for a few years to put together baskets and made sure they got to who they needed to go to.
aw, Lauri.. I'm glad you were able to step back today!
It's hard. We all get caught up in our own lives, and our own hardships are all we know- so they are difficult and trying for us. For DH and I, we are very lucky in a lot of ways. We have our times that are a bit more financially...um, interesting...than others, but in the grand scheme of things, $20-30 makes a FAR bigger difference to some of these kids (and PARENTS) than it does to us. Especially now that we have a child of our own- the idea of not being able to supply a toy for under the tree is beyond words. I'm not talking Wiis, or Xbox 360s, but a simple thing like the $25 Weebalot Castle that this little boy wanted. It broke my heart when I saw the little tag on that tree. For a parent to write down and admit that they cannot supply a $25 toy for a child who desperately wants it...that particular year even made DH's eyes well up. Not every year hits me that hard, but I'll always remember that year. We got him the castle, and then we got some extras to go with it too- extra weebles and such, just to spoil the crap out of him. I think we spent $40.And when we had our Christmas morning together and opened the gifts we had bought each other and sat back with our coffee...we talked about how excited that little boy was to open that present and play with his Weebles. I think buying that gift was better than anything we bought each other that year.
We just like to pay it forward a little bit. Sometimes at my old office, I would do the back to school tree- you know, you get a tag with the clothing sizes and age of a child. My friends and I would all get a cute little outfit, a bag of socks, and stuff it into a small, inexpensive backpack in case they didn't have one, with cool pencils and things like that. Things that have to do with children and animals just get me. Can't help it.
Thanks everyone, for your feedback. Not sure if St. Joe's is an employee only thing, and I avoid St. John's like the plague (i really don't care for that church)...but it sounds like I should be able to find a tree locally and that makes me happy. I appreciate your taking the time to reply.
